10.5-mile stretch of Tijuana River was transformed into a board concrete channel four decades ago when flood control and land development was an important objective. On this present day, proposed by two San Diego professors, there is an ambitious vision for the river channel to be transformed into a solar energy farm and for wastewater and run-off treatment using algae systems. Is this a realistic vision? They would first need permission from Mexico’s federal government and funding before going head with this.

The article highlights how many cities in the U.S. are rethinking their waterfronts in order to address major environmental challenges such as drought, flooding, pollution and heat island effect. Landscape Architect Kimberly Garza stresses that from an aging levee network to the environmental instability, there is a need in Sacramento to reassess the river as “ecological generator and part community connector. ” This is a fascinating read, which explores how small-scale designs along the river can combat the larger-scale issues. Creative solutions include an urban beach or canal streets that allow for urban kayaking. Related article: 10 awesome riverbank projects

A new research published by the University of Sheffield and The Young Foundation has found that public benches are essential for improving mental health, battling issues such as isolation and loneliness, and social wellbeing, allowing people to connect with people in their community. The research disregards the idea that hanging out on public benches are a potential anti-social behavior and hence deliberately placing uncomfortable seating to dissuade a meeting should be discouraged. This puts a different spin on the design of public benches and essentially raises a question of how more people can be encouraged to use benches.

Stefano Boeri’s “bosco verticale” in Milan has been one of the most beautiful, radical and daring high-rise projects in the world to date. Now, the Italian Architect has been selected to build a 117-meter tall residential tower in Lausanne, Switzerland that bears similarities to the Vertical Forest in Milan. Commencing construction in 2017, the building will be home to more than 100 trees in the 3,000 square meters of greenery.
