Your post is a good example of why professors don’t teach more AutoCAD in schools… given the steep learning curve, AutoCAD is difficult to teach, especially if your professors and GTAs have little or no real-world experience.
AJ Slater wrote an ebook that he shamelessly plugged mentioned several times in this space a while back. I have not read…[Read more] -

yes thats my impression too. the renderings look like sketch up 1.0…but wanted to find out if somebody tried the product – in tutorials (you tube) found some features looking promissing…sketch up can look really bad at first but you can do wonders with it..so i couldnt be sure…

With extensive experience in AutoCAD I can tell you that there are so many subtle features to make line type scale consistent between paper space and model space and annotating read correctly it is my opinion that you are going to, as other have pointed out here, just keep plugging away.
Specifically regarding LT scale check you psltscale settings. -

Never used it. Appears more for homeowners and small landscapers. It is interesting to look at it: the “real plant pictures” look like photos but the “renderings” they show on their site look like Victorian valentine day cards with a tract home in the background. Ugh.

Keep things consistent – there are many ways to do things. Rule of thumb I’ve stuck with through many offices is if it exists in the real world, it stays in model space, if it doesn’t (mostly the text) it’s in paper space. On detail sheets normally everything is in model space.
The more organized an office is overall, the more likely the o…[Read more] -

I looked for the same type of info not so long ago. Spent hours reading stuff here and on other sites, downloaded tons of blocks, linetypes, and so forth… On my part, I work with people who do not have CAD standards, so I kinda make up my own, bit by bit. It’s quite time consuming, but I consider it an investment on ‘the learning curve’.
As for…[Read more]

It really depends on the firm and what your interests are. If you are more design oriented and architectural in your thinking, than the obvious is an architecture firm. I’ve worked in both and have had good experiences in both, but it really depends on the firm and the role you play there. I had to “fight” for responsibility and respect with a few…[Read more]

What you’re going to find (and sounds like you already have) is that there is no one right way to do construction docs. There are no standards. Or rather there are, but they’re not a one size fits all solution and nobody follows all of them. Every office is going to do things a little bit different; some of them will have very detailed and ri…[Read more]

Sure thing,
When I click on “Post A Job,” I get linked to this site: “http://land8.net/signup_firm.php” but nothing pops up on that site. The page just looks blank white.
About 2 weeks ago I was able to sign up my firm, but then there was no way to continue the process, and then a week after I tried to post the job using the same link “Post A…[Read more] -

What matters more is the studio culture – are they inter-disciplinary and collaborative vs top-down, etc. I’ve had good experiences in both, but sometimes the LA studio in a larger office is there to ‘shrub it up’ to save on the cost of a consultant. Some architects and engineers understand landscape issues as well as any LA, so those are the b…[Read more]

Hey Brian – how’s it going? Blast from the past in seeing your name.
To follow up on Brian’s point, and to speak highly of my time at RISD, one of its great assets is that you can enroll in Brown University’s Sheridan Teaching Program. It’s a year-long course that helps prepare one to teach in higher education. RISD has developed its own se…[Read more]

We’d like to encourage more LA’s onto the UK network I help run Andrew, (not in anyway to compete with Land8 – we’re a more diverse network). Check out http://www.landscapehub.co.uk some time and perhaps look into the Futurescape Show happening at Kempton Park later this month.

I don’t know if this is available/suitable to your area :
Trachelospermum asiaticum
Jasmine smell, grows in shade, use as groundcover or climber. Trim if you’re not after ‘natural’ look -

The Sustainable Sites Initiative 12 years, 8 months agoMatt – From what I understand, the U.S. Botanic Garden does not support the lawsuit. I believe this to be true because out of the three organizations, the U.S. Botanic Garden has the greatest legal resources and influence. Ficus pumila. Certainly does well on east-facing walls and I’ve seen it on north-facing wall too in USDA zone 9. This evergreen has attractive juvenile leaves which belie its eventual aggresiveness

Mr. Wainner,
Thank you for the comment. We do have built design work under our belt, and I’m not sure why it is not shown, but my guess is that it’s because a majority of our work deals with eminent domain, which usually entails being hired as an expert to produce regulatory and site analysis of each case, and solutions to the damages caused by…[Read more]
