The Landscape Architecture Foundation has a collection of Case Studies within the Landscape Performance Series. All are accessible and free to download at http://www.lafoundation.org/research/landscape-performance-series/case-studies/ .
The case studies focus on the environmental, social and economic performance of landscape projects, with some…[Read more] -

I think Spurlock Porier is one of the best in the area, I think. James Barnett is always advertising, don’t know why, but that does not seem great to me.

Sounds like you’re in a good position: busy. I think you’ll find K-State graduates would be well equipped for a job like this. I’d definitely recommend getting in touch with someone in the landscape architecture department there. I also know several grads from Iowa State that do very fine work.

There is the job board here on land8 and you could also post on the asla website. I’ve heard if you post on asla you could get over 50 resumes for an entry level job.

There’s a difference btw being taught the programs and being knowledgeable. It seems that it’s reasonable to expect exposure to the software but if someone can’t work in them fast enough, it’s not really worth the bother for an employer. Then there’s the whole area of whether someone can use it as a meaningful design tool…

It’s probably too late to reply to this post now, since you probably already decided where to go. I’m in the program now and lived in the student housing.
Housing in Old Town Alexandria and in the neighboring areas is high. The campus is in the middle of a city and 10 minutes to DC, so you can’t expect it to be very cheap. The student housing is…[Read more]

Roland:
Just saw this ad. This firm has carved out a very respectable niche in the Central Coast of California by doing exceptional and very environmentally grounded work. They would offer you a great work experience but in one of the most expensive places to live in California. The wages will not match up.

Postscript:
Bear in mind that SoCal is already flooded with unemployed or underemployed CalPoly SLO and Pomona grads, all very good programs that put out mostly capable and versatile talent. The job market is just beginning to return and you will find the headwinds of competition to be stiff.

I have been missing in action here for quite sometime, but wanted to give you some recommendations, since I practiced, both in public and private settings in San Diego in almost another previous existence.
The recommendations Ms. Rupel gave you are very sound and stand up firms, whether they are hiring is a completely different st…[Read more] -

Unfortunately my class never got the opportunity to experience either of those programs within our curriculum. My program was in the middle of a transition revamping the curriculum and my class had the privilege (slightly sarcastic) of being the guinea pigs.
I think it would be greatly beneficial and place students at the fore front of design (or…[Read more] -

Things are improving at the little design/build firm I work with.
I’m learning a lot about the construction side of things; really getting into the what you need to install retaining walls. We’re currently putting in a koi pond and the logistics of it has been interesting to observe. The pipe/parts supplier sent us a waterfall starter that was…[Read more]

The first time I took my registered nurse exam (yea, I’m both an RN and a PLA) I looked for the right answer and only answered 75% of the test before my time ran out. The second time I took the test I eliminated the wrong answers without looking for the right answer and passed in record time. I disagreed with the right answer but knew the others…[Read more]
