I saw that they have a golf course product now. I am glad to hear about the ability to add people. The last time I used VizTerra that feature had not been implemented. Also, I do agree that it grows on you. Like a lot of things, you have to get use to it.

roland, there was an extensive article on LA in China in the New York times a few weeks ago – LA in China is very hot, and they are doing an enourmous amount of construction..It did quote to Chinese LA’s as saying that foreigners would be hired at higher salaries but would be stuck there , and would not be able to advance, due to lack of local…[Read more]

Jon, I understand your frustration. I’m thinking of creating my own work to combat this issue. Best of Luck

Update – I’ve been using VizTerra for about a month now and its really grown on me. The building modeling tools are a bit crude, but if you are doing residential design, you could still convincingly model at least 90% of the homes out there. I like the fact that it comes with all these different trees and models of site furniture that you don’t…[Read more]

I’ve noticed that major homebuilders have resumed building here in Las Vegas in the last few months, which is rather amazing considering that there is a huge inventory of unsold homes and forclosures either on the market or kept waiting in the wings by the banks that own them. I don’t know who they think will buy these homes. As has been mentioned…[Read more]

How far into the future are you being asked to project? The cynic in me says of Landscape Architecture is unemployment.

Brittany and Shengyi Yue,
Thanks for the advice. I wanted to make sure I wouldn’t regret not applying for the job. It’s been a year or two since any firm has been interested in me. But it sounds like staying in grad school is definitely the better choice for now. -

It depends. If the firms are located in Shanghai or Beijing, it might be a great opportunity to do so. The economical ressession is not affecting china as much as United State. Besides, in large cities there is no language issue. My classmate will intern this summer in shanghai. He said that most of the stuff members in that firm are Australian and…[Read more]

If you can’t understand the hardscape (anything not softscape) you will never be a landscape architect. First you must be the “architect” part of Landscape Architect then you can become a great Landscape Architect. First you have to be able to write music then you can become a Mozart.

Nick, It reminds me of the ‘required agricultural preserve’ in the Town of Southampton, a guideline that was required for residential subdivisions in the entire Town. An eleven lot residential subdivision, for example, (1-5 ac. lots) would preserve 20-30 acres of the site for agriculture, to retain the agricultural nature of the community…[Read more]

Thanks Trace. I vaguely recall Corners book and the photos.
We have a lot of great examples of center-pivots and other interesting ag patterns here in colorado, but typically those patterns disappear when suburbs sprout up.
I did find a website dedicated to ‘agriburbia’ of which I learned the founders of the movement are right here in Boulder,…[Read more]

Nope.
Laid-off 6 weeks ago. Watched a 29 person firm wither to 4 guys at half-pay (yes, you read that right…. half pay). Now the remaining get 75% pay because of my being pushed over-board to lighten the lifeboat.
14+ months at 50% pay teaches you how to survive on next-to-nothing in prep for being unemployed. 8 resume’s out so far…. not a…[Read more]

Yes, this is true. It’s similar to a military officers first walking in the shoes of the enlisted man, not necessarily essential but does develop a higher degree of professionalism. This discussion goes on and on about LAs and LDs. It’s the “A” folks. The “A”rchitecture, the hardscape, the construction not the scale. A landscape designer can be…[Read more]
