Andrew Garulay, RLA replied to the topic In Case of Emergency- What if this Tag-Team Actually Wins ? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 1 month ago
In 2008 people felt like they did not like the status quo. The idea was that change has to be better than what we had. The question “What if this Tag-Team Actually Wins” is just that – a question. A question, just as it was in 2008.
What is no longer a question is “What if this Tag-Team does not win”. You know what that will get you because you…[Read more] -

No one is going to bring up the irony that it is assumed that the situation is fine if a Certified Arborist is caring for the tree while it is a Certified Arborist asking if it will work? No disrespect for Jay or any other CA, but this question does not seem to be a standard situation that all of them have with a standard game plan in place to…[Read more]

I’ve seen it on Facebook, quite a bit. It is fairly common practice for radio shows to do this sort of thing.

There is more to consider than the size of the space and ultimate site of the plant.
Life span of this garden is one of them. It is not uncommon for some people to re-landscape or alter a landscape in a short number of years. Others may do little or nothing for many years.
Maintenance is the next big issue. Not only whether there will be a…[Read more] -

Civils got hit hard in my neck of the woods. I was lucky enough to be in the oldest one around when it hit the fan. All the other ones around had layoffs and hours cut back, though. It was not good. They are still down, but not as bad. It helps that we are in a heavily regulated area where lots of wealthy people from other states want to have a…[Read more]

I’m always surprised by how many people think they’ll have a better shot of getting work if they specialize their education. You’d be taking a field of limited opportunity (at this time) and further limit it to a small portion of the field. Typically, the thought is to be one of the few qualified to work in that niche, but is that really…[Read more]

I did not say the government should not invest. I’m just saying that investing in green without a vibrant economy is not going to happen for very long. More importantly, the investment in green does not make an economy that does not exist.
All of it comes back into play when the economy recovers. It is the nature of our society. When the public…[Read more] -

When I first joined this forum there was a lot of discussion about how the economy was going to be lifted by going green. I said back then that when the economy is down, these type of changes don’t happen. They happen when prosperity can afford them. The big changes that work come when things are going well and/or it is practical for consumers to…[Read more]

I have an Intel core i7 in my laptop and an AMD Athlon II X4 640 in my desk top using ACAD LT 2012 in both with no issues. I don’t use sketchup that often, but have not experienced problems with either when I do. I use the desk top far more than the laptop for what that is worth.

Necessity does not displace creativity. Creativity is what needs to be used to solve problems. It is not limited to unbridled whims.
When necessities are overlooked in order to be expressive it is a lack of creativity. It is no different to ignore the parameters of an office or a market place than it is to ignore a soil condition or c…[Read more] -

These are neither on anyone’s list of priorities to fix or nix on either ticket, nor what keeps many people from sleeoing at night.
As James Carville said twenty years ago when there was a very mild recession “it’s the economy …”Either accept that everyting is great, and “the new normal” is a good thing, or that things are not so good and…[Read more]

This is a good topic to discuss right now due to the huge increase in West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Enciphilites (sp?). We just had a death reported this morning here in Massachusetts from EEE. Andrew Garulay, RLA replied to the topic double and single steps in outdoor patios. in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 2 months ago
Curbs and landings are very common and safe single elevation changes we all see and experience almost every day. There is a safety issue associated with an unexpected elevation change. The key is to make sure that it is not unexpected.
The safety issue of a drop off all the way across an uninterupted patio is very difficult to mitigate, but when…[Read more] -

It is a patio, not a walk way. A single elevation change is not uncommon on a residential deck or patio as are two risers in a set of steps (three risers can require a railing that many like to avoid). You should be cautious with any elevation change in a patio because they are gathering places where people often are interacting with theier back…[Read more]

All the infinity edge pools that I’ve had anything to do with had a short drop to the catch trough. I never thought about whether it was necessary because of the drop over the coping edge, but we were always avoiding railings closing in from both sides because of the drop off next to the pool.
Can you terrace the wall so that there is only a…[Read more] -

I think it is a good subject for discussion. I’m reading it. I’m with Rob at this point. Where does the rubber hit the road – how does it transfer from a concept to built work that is unique and not something that would not be derived from a normal design process?
