I went to Boulder City many times when I lived in the Las Vegas valley and I can vouch for how well done it is. Its also a very comfortable place to walk, which is rare in the valley. Today it is considered to be one of the more desireable places to live in the area. I suppose the fact that they don’t allow gambling within city limits also in…[Read more]

Regarding “going green”, In my area I still often see ads for energy analysts and energy efficiency experts for buildings and I know companies are investing a lot in improving the performance of their facilities in this way. Its not so much the sexy stuff, like windmills and solar, more like weather stripping on doors, and updated, more e…[Read more]

That’s because they were all working for the WPA, the CCC and the NPS and had nothing to complain about! OK, that’s conjecture on my part, but I recall reading about noted landscape architect Lawrence Halprin’s work designing camps for migrant farm workers as an employee of the WPA. They were simple and low budget, but they were the c…[Read more]

Hey, even Joe Scarborough has conceded that he doesn’t expect Rmoney to win, saying he is a man with a lot of ambition and some gret accomplishments, but not what it takes to be president. Yet you can still count on TP office-holders in smaller arenas to push for reduced government programs. Maybe they’ll mount the armed insurrection that so…[Read more]

I’ve noticed the same thing in Appalachian mountain areas and even lower coastal plain areas where grade changes and the construction of basements likely affected the level of the water table. When trees are mature and have spent most of their life with a source of water at a level where they’ve put most of their roots, they’re not going to make…[Read more]

Seems like a good system. What you’re talking about with a trolley system within a channel so the mechanics are concealed seems like the best option to me. The leading section would pull the other leaves out or back in. Are they saying it will not be ad…[Read more] -

Reconfigure our society so that aesthetics in the built environment are more highly valued than plastic surgery, celebrity gossip, and cheap beer. Disconnect it from the sprawl boom and bust cycle so that it can be a more viable lifetime career.
Hey, you didn’t say it had to be realistic!

Boilerplater replied to the topic How many Landscape Architects are there in the world? in the forum RESEARCH 12 years, 4 months ago
When I look for a job, I surmise that there are too many. When I look at the built environment around me, I feel that there aren’t enough.

Boilerplater replied to the topic Wildlife Crossing: Good idea? in the forum SUSTAINABILITY & DESIGN 12 years, 4 months ago
The NJDOT had a couple of these along I-80 (I think). From what I heard anecdotally from their wildlife people, they are quite effective. Of course the highway is fenced for miles in each direction there. From the highway, they look like just another overpass, but with extra-thick (7′ tall!) beams that they placed a lot of fill on. It was jus…[Read more]

I suppose they are maintaining a fantasy that they will find someone who is independently wealthy and just does LA work because that’s what he likes to do for fun and doesn’t really care about compensation. It is rather ridiculous to expect what they outline of someone. This is for someone who does not need what one would normally expect of a j…[Read more]

Just remember that its not your fault. These companies just have no need to hire right now. I don’t even get rejection letters most of the time! The country is not in building mode right now. All I see under construction in my area are dollar stores and hospitals!

Meh. It uses a limited range of sources. Fox business? Appears as fear-mongering to thwart the Obama re-election. That said, there is a lot of evidence that things are not great, and will not be great for a long time. But 50% unemployment? Some years ago I heard from a guy who worked for the Trenton, NJ parks department about a large supply of salvaged bluestone sidewalk slabs that they had. I actually got hold of one for my own house.
