Crushed stone is pretty much ALL they would use in Las Vegas since organic mulches dry up and blow away. Same thing in Phoenix, from what I’ve seen. I guess there are plenty of other nefarious activities that people can preoccupy themselves with there so I never noticed a problem with it as projectiles, door openers, etc. And there it is so dry…[Read more]

Where can you find landscape architects? Just place some online ads. The resumes will come pouring in. As for set up costs, you need to figure out how much space you’ll need and then talk to some commercial realtors about leasing such space. Desks, computers & CAD & Adobe CS software, my very rough ballpark is about $15K each. Going to insur…[Read more]

I like Pruned…the author, Alexander Trevi, is a gifted writer and tireless researcher.

Dylan Radigan, MSNBC show this morning: of the percentage of unemployed workers in America today, only 4.8% have college degrees.
I’ve seen numbers like that elsewhere, and wondered how true it is. I know a lot of people with substantial educations that aren’t working. In my own neighborhood, there is someone with a Master’s in biology who wo…[Read more] -

So their other option would be to do what, exactly? Put those profits into a trust fund to keep employees paid and sitting at their desks surfing the internet during downturns? Other businesses are just as guilty of living large during the boom times. I think it is human nature, often to our detriment, to live as swanky as the budget all…[Read more]

Wow, that was informative! Sounds like you’ve had direct involvement with the planning of a lot of these places. You use some very British terms. Could you please explain a few of them? I watched a lot of British sitcoms and Monty Python growing up, but these are unfamiliar! Kettling? Barracking? Also, your use of “dear” is unusual. You see…[Read more]

Ha! The joke is on YOU, as I have been subscribing to The Hedonistic Imperative for YEARS! You are not going to like what we have planned for people like you! To eliminate human suffering, we must first eradicate those who make us suffer!

“Genetic engineering” huh?! You mean like eugenics? You know who else was a fan of eugenics? Hitler! Of course he lef tout the “peaceful” part and wanted fighters. -

Here’s what some Brit architects have had to say about it:

I think its interesting that the idea that it is a problem of the disadvantaged and poor is assumed by all of them. Its “those people” that are doing the rioting. The architects that present themselves as more socially progressive tend t…[Read more] -

OK, what about the evidence that “entitlement” programs (wow, I hate using that term in a pejorative sense, the way Repubs do) have caused a decline in African American families headed by two parents. I recall reading that the number was much higher before the ’60s. Of course, a whole host of social factors have combined to reduce the overall r…[Read more]

Yeah, they just LOVE brown in the desert Southwest. I’ve read that its the hardest thing to get used to about the physical landscape. It was for me, after spending most of my life in the seasonally lush northeast.
Is this for a noise barrier? We tried so many different form liners and color applications when I was with the NJDOT. Some of t…[Read more] -

For a cheap place to stay, there is a hostel in the Little Italy of SD. There is also a cheap hotel geared more towards young people & students. You need to bring your own sheets! There is no daily cleaning. Can’t recall the name. Both are within walking distance of the convention center, and a short cab ride from the airport.

I’ve noticed a lot of design/build firms, including ones that I knew didn’t have any licensed people on staff, using “landscape architect” as a search keyword so that their advertising comes up through search engines and on the advertising sidebars of pages. That’s kind of annoying, and I imagine its difficult to prosecute, as a board would have…[Read more]

On a related note, I had a little laugh when I read that ad for a landscape architect in Abu Dhabi on the board here. It states that they want a female European. Reminded me of how different labor laws are in some places. You can’t discriminate like that on craigslist…at least the US craiglists!

And if we’re nitpicking, I don’t think that blue standing seam metal roofing works AT ALL! They probably paid a lot of money for it too! Should have gone with copper or a more muted color.
