Let me clarify…I meant to imply that the PARTICULAR microbrew the arch’s were imbibing was swill…boiled grass clippings. Not all microbrews, they just pick the bad ones. Its all about the label and appearances.

Yes, yes they do. But only Heineken, Amstel Light…or some obscure microbrew, none of which is very good.

If you are working…stay working, you are getting practical experience. I don’t know if you were looking to go back to Penn State, but since you already have a 5 year BLA (Make sure the 5 yr part is on your resume), you essentially already have an MLA, minus a thesis. Since PSU now has MS degrees in LA, if you are interested in either of those…[Read more]

You can get it for $60 on recycled trees, or $44 digital without a membership. Expensive…yes, but cheaper than a membership.

It would be nice if it were that simple. I had taken only ONE art course in college…mixed media drawing and painting. I did take a number of architectural history and theory courses, as well as LOTS of natural sciences including biology, ecology, geology, and physics. As well, I took some oddballs, like psychology and political science. Each ha…[Read more] -

From my experience, I would propose that engineers are getting worse than architects as far as overreaching their skill sets at the expense of the other design professions. They think they can handle anything and are trying to run the jobs instead of the architect when a building is involved. And while they may be compitent in a few areas, they…[Read more]

I agree to a point. If you are good at design, then you can stand a pretty good shot at designing almost anything. However, that doesn’t meant you have an apitiude for a particular type of design.
As always, it comes down to the details. I have found that when architects try to design landscapes or even hardscapes, they really can’t do the…[Read more] -

I take copious amounts of photos on site. I do that profesionaly as well for large events on public grounds. Not pretty shots…functional shots. Always with some kind of reference point or measurement. That way, I have a record of what is there and I can interpolate data if need to or fill in the blanks from the photo. You can use bricks to…[Read more]

I also insist on a survey. If it is existing, I also insist on having the site SHOT down to the hundredth of a inch elevation (two decimal places), rather than interpolated which can have an error factor of over 6″. This is critical for ADA and setting FFEs. I’ve had way too many surveys be terifically inaccurate in the past few years. I th…[Read more]

Who applies mulch in a 4″ blanket? Nobody I’ve seen, thats for sure. I know that is what your are supposed to do, but more often than not, it is more like 1-1/2″ t0 2″. I’ve also seen crews just rake on more mulch, not aerate the old stuff or remove it entirely.
If you use good mulch, then you don’t have the issues with bugs or fungii. Shreded…[Read more] -

I just got an e-mail with something similar in the same city as Nick mentioned. Be careful as there have been scams with promises to work in China or the middle east, they ask for your personal info to “process” your application, or ask for money upfront. Thay also may be recruiters looking to make a buck, and they charge you a small fortune for…[Read more]

Many (well most I deal with) commercial developers will not allow any type of gravel or rock mulch be used in the landscaping for a number of reasons. One, if it is too fine and escapes the bed/curb, it can become a liability from being a tripping hazard. Two, it can be a real pain to keep neat and to weed. Third, if it is large, it can be used…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Naming Residential Drawings in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 14 years, 5 months ago
Remember the end user…you have to dumb it down for the clientele. Master plan would be fine for the overall drawing of the property, with detail plans to follow. Even overall site plan would be appropriate. It is more appropriate the end user understand the plan set and what it is showing than to use professional naming conventions.
