Thanks for the post. This is just …..Meh? Probably should not have ever been built, especially since he is already memorialized on the Mall. Halprin’s, while still much too large, is much, much nicer. I think I’ll pass, much.

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Greenroof Turfgrass in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 2 months ago
Look into this stuff. It is a rhizomatic low-growing variety of bluegrass. It only grows to 2″ or 3″ meaning low/no mowing and since it is rhizomatic, it self-heals and needs much less watering. And since I first spotted it, they seem to have a deal with LiveRoof to make it into green roof modules, which makes the whole operation that much e…[Read more]

I’d go with synthetic turf on a roof like that. You just don’t have the soil depth for proper root growth. If this was in Florida, you may have been able to use a bermuda with very heavy maintenance and replacement schedules. You can try a creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) that is used on golf course putting greens. It is a cool season g…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Rendering programs for AutoCAD site plans in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 2 months ago
I used to use M-Color and I loved it. The AutoCAD plug-in software works by creating closed polylines and it automatically fills them by layer. Using pre-formatted templates for prototype buildings and a standardized palette, I was able to crank out three different site plans in a day with this as coloring is pretty much instantaneous. All you d…[Read more]

That document is a City Planning Department document and project. It has been going on for a very long time and is still progressing today. A great deal of it is being done with private money, so it is taking a while to implement, and it is being implemented in the areas of the city where it makes the most economic sense and where the…[Read more]

If you are creating retention basins that have standing water for more than a few hours, you are doing it wrong.

I would add two things:
Before you leave for the day, lock up all of your tools, including pens, pencils, and especially trace and scales, if you can. Or just take them home with you. Otherwise, IT WILL BE TAKEN.
Free food makes for a happy studio. Donuts and/or bagels are particularly appreciated. -

Sorry…no less than 4″ and no more than 7″ for the risers. and the risers must be consistent. Single tread is 13″ min, more than one tread, 11″ minimum.

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic double and single steps in outdoor patios. in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 2 months ago
You can certainly place a single step or a set of stairs in a landscape, especially on a patio. It is fairly common to do so. It is not recommended to do so on a means of egress for reasons of the general public not being able to see it in an emergency, but it is exempt in a private residential application on the means of egress. Off the means of…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Infinity Edge Pool Liability in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 12 years, 2 months ago
In theory, if your pool floor is 42″ or more below the infinity edge you should be fine as the pool wall is acting as the code required guard for a drop of more than 30″. If the drop is less than 30″ then you don’t need anything at all from the deck or the pool, or the pool itself.
Be sure to check with your local health department and building c…[Read more] -

Thanks. This system is pretty standardized and traditionalized through all manner of industries, but of course, the creative arts (of which LA is one) expect a bit more. My suggestions are not to say you cannot be creative with what you produce for an application, but it should contain a STRONG structure and logic to its organization, and don’t…[Read more]

I don’t know if this is ‘resume’ is lumped into the entire application package (resume/cover letter/work samples), but the general consensus from career HR professionals (I know a number of them personally) is just the opposite of this. The particular person who wrote what they look in this posting for is certainly an anomaly.

Be very careful. Unless this is a three day a week thing and you have dedicated students, BE VERY CAREFUL that you can actually write a check your butt can cash. I led a student group in grad school on an independent study course that was to design a memorial. Just design, no install. I had pretty much to run everything, which I was not too…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic A very scary calculator button – Push at your own risk in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 12 years, 4 months ago
Not quite, I’ve seen this same concept pushed by a wide array of financial journalists the last month or so, maybe not to the alarmist exetent, but echoing the lack of a substantial and sustained recovery. Earning are down and razor thin, and the real worry comes in the form of earnings projections that are on par with the worst of 2008.

It is a bit different between architecture and landscape architecture. We are burdened with the ‘landscape’ part which automatically put the pickiture in the public’s head that we are somehow involved with mowing their lawn or planting pansies.
