I like the Natural/cultivated edge also. It would not work very well between sand and soil or in an active recreation area.

Your photos look like standard plastic edging and not the bend-a-board? Also why do people feel the need to put edging up against hardscapes like sidewalks, driveways, etc?

Jordan Lockman replied to the topic Autocad 2011 – Where do I start? in the forum TECHNOLOGY 14 years, 7 months ago
At my local tech school they put together a CAD class after multiple people had talked to them about it. It would not hurt to contact the instructor for the daytime class and see if they would be willing to do an evening class. Maybe see if you can find others in your situation. Also try the library for books or other information it is free and…[Read more]

Jordan Lockman replied to the topic Firepit Construction in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 7 months ago
In wood fireplaces we would use well casing sections. They were almost free and worked great. Also at home in my wood fire pit I made ring with Firebrick and dry laid stone on top of that. It has worked well. Again these are wood fireplaces not gas.

Jordan Lockman replied to the topic Seeking Alternatives – How to become a RLA when the traditional jobs just aren't out there? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 7 months ago
I worked design/build for the first 3 years out of school. It took a year and a half off the experience requirement since it counted at half time. I didn’t end up needing it though since I waited until I was seven years out to get licensed.
If you want to get a jump on things take all your tests and know that you have the luxury to take your…[Read more] -
Jordan Lockman replied to the topic NO water use plants in Alpine Areas in the forum PLANTS & HORTICULTURE 14 years, 8 months ago
Look into North American Rock Garden Society. They have a nice forum on their site, that you can look through. I joined the local chapter and have learned a whole lot about alpines and rock gardens. Many of the rock garden plants are the same as what you can use on green roofs.
So sedums and succulants are the easiest to work with, silene,…[Read more] -

Many firms do make a good living doing nothing more than answering RFP/RFQs. We have recieved some projects this way, but there is usually quite a bit of competition for them.

Jordan Lockman replied to the topic Current Software used in LA offices? in the forum TECHNOLOGY 14 years, 8 months ago
I used Dynascape at one of the design build firms I worked at. It was cheap at the time I am not sure about now. They also targeted design build firms with their marketing.
Our office uses Revit and Microstation, but we are an Architecture firm and the LA’s and Interiors go where the Architects go. -

I am not even sure that an MLA is worth more outside of Teaching than a BLA.

Jordan Lockman replied to the topic TANKLESS UNDERGROUND WATER HARVESTING in the forum DETAILS & MATERIALS 14 years, 10 months ago
Why go through the extra hassle of using making your porous pavers impermeable to collect water. Why not just have cheaper and easier to maintain concrete. Then collect the runoff directly into a cistern for rainwater harvesting. Seems like you are throwing out common sense for cliche green elements? You are creating a “Rube Goldberg” device…[Read more]

Jordan Lockman replied to the topic Warm Season Grasses vs. Cool Season Grasses: Knowing the Difference Can Improve Your Designs in the forum PLANTS & HORTICULTURE 14 years, 10 months ago
Learned this one the hard way as well. The design looks great in august or if you leave the foliage stay from the previous year. Otherwise there are the giant gaps until the soil heats up.
This brings up the challenge of dealing with maintenance as part of your design. When I am designing a garden for myself I use lots of cool season grasses…[Read more] -
