Well, maybe a few did and most of them are not around anymore to tell us how bad it really was. I’m doing my part, actually putting money INTO my savings account for the first time in over 6 months. I think the tide is shifting, though I doubt we’re looking at a v-shaped recovery, maybe more like a ‘U’…but hopefully not a ‘W’ or worse, an ‘M.’

I dont think you could limit HGTV to the detriment it has on the public perception of landscape design(ers), but design in general.
The public thinks design is fashion du jour- spiky hair, skinny jeans, and lime green. LA is just not that glamorous. We design streets and move dirt around. Sometimes we design intimate spaces which I think tend to…[Read more]

Good points Leland, and I think you’re echoing a lot of what others have already said.
It seems the last page or so of comments is circling nearer to what I think is the core issue- Being that there may be a fundamental difference in the way some of us think about the well-being of the profession as ‘reactive’ or ‘proactive’ both in the way we…[Read more]

The process sounds like a nightmare judging from what I’ve heard and read here and elsewhere. Thanks for taking the inititive with this whether it be a fruitful cause ot otherwise.

I agree in theory Damian with the basis of your argument, but I’m a little taken-a-back by the term ‘navel-gazing.’ I know what you mean, but to me this conjurs up the assumption that there are simply a lot of bored people out there with nothing better to do than talk semantics. But I hesitate to make a snap judgement in assuming I can know what…[Read more]

I agree.
How does the recent mass layoffs factor into that 20% predicted growth number? I also wonder how the BLS collects statistics like this. Is the number based on the projected number of future university graduates becoming practicing professionals or is it something else? As it is the labor pool for la and arch is oversaturated.…[Read more]

If you dont have time or patience to read my essay above, in summation below is what I’m getting at:
I am essentially in agreement with both you and the others saying that the title doesn’t matter in regard to experience. I agree with both sides, but challenge that we may be skirting the true issue.
Also, not particularly well written, but I…[Read more]

Diana/Austin et al-
I think you make a good point, but I think the core of the issure here lies more engrained in the question of how ‘we’ make inroads to the type of work we all think we can do better than the next consultant when the stereotype says we are something very different?
I think many land8er’s wwould agree that la’s have the potentia…[Read more]

I appreciate that Andrew. I may do the same for the purpose of furthering another discussion on the cusp of reaching some concesus.
I think it’s important for the average Joe landscape architect to be recognized as being within the same community as the ‘big time planner’ landscape architect because it helps validate a profession which many feel…[Read more]

I just returned to Denver after spending a week in the greater Chicago area.
I spent an evening in Riverside, Olmsted’s residential development circa the late 1800’s. Being there reaffirmed to me that the Olmsted firms planning work certainly is a predecessor to contemporary land planning-much of which many of us would probably agree could be…[Read more]

For the most part Andrew I agree with everything you stated.
Though, in regard to land planning, la’s in many cases have only themselves to blame for some pretty poor ‘land stewardship.’ It shouldn’t be surprising that such prolific architects and designers as duany and alsop are casting stones in our direction. New urbanism is the antithesis of…[Read more]

I think the root of the issue lies a little deeper than a particular title. I think there are a lot of people out there wondering about the validity of the profession. I wonder if I really have or will have the tools to do the kind of work I want to do and which is most important in my mind- having the greatest positive impact on society and the…[Read more]

At the risk of barring myself from ever being in the employ of corner or his cohorts I’ll agree, from what I’ve seen and read despite the fact that all of my professors and many of my colleagues hold him in the highest regard. I’m a bit surprised to read a comment from Trace about such a virile theorist, philosopher, and …collager in the profession.

Hmm..
Just of the top of my head I could tell you that there are website resources like cben.net (cad block exchange network) which offer free cad symbols and blocks. There are a couple of those sites. That’s about the best I can come up with at the moment.
Good Luck..

I worked in autocad when I did red line edits for the irrigation designers at edaw in fort collins. I think they all used vanilla autocad with some custom symbols/tags.

Eric,
I couldn’t tell you how to do it using drop shadows, but I could offer some good advice on doing it manually in photoshop without creating numerous layer copies and keeping the file size down.
send me a message if you still need help with this and I’ll explain some simple tricks.
