  • Rhino a better product than Adesk ??

I dont know. Personally, I use vray for Sketchup with linework usually done in cad, but alot of times I do very very little modeling and complete 75% of the drawing in photoshop and other media and keep the modeling and rendering to a minimum with only the highly textured or focus objects like walls and paths,…[Read more]

    Brandon-

I think you’re talking about “business development.” It sounds like you’re looking for a rainmaker, not necessarily a marketing rep. I’ll default to my earlier comments here about landscape architecture as a product.

The great firms you’ve mentioned, some of whom I have a very limited experience working for, in my opinion built their…[Read more]

    Paul-

I’m wondering if there is a critical period of time where it has been “too long” until you re-engage in a project or drawing. In other words, perhaps you can stay away too long?

The project I walked away from over a week ago feels almost totally alien to me. I feel I need to spend some time rehashing things I already thought about and note…[Read more]

    Rico-

Thats exactly the scenario I’m trying to train myself for. I get pretty frustrated when I’m working on a studio project and I get burnt out on it and have to step away, because I want to be prepared to be able to push through in a professional situation. Thanks for the kick in the @%% though ; )

We’ve got some snow here in Colorado. I’ve…[Read more]

  • Generally, the industry standard for 2d drafting is AutoCAD. Used in conjunction with software add-ons like LandFX, cad becomes a very efficient and powerful tool for creating drawings. I have also heard good things about Landmark by Vectorworks, but never tried it.

I do have to add though- Any cad program is no substitute for a good design…[Read more]

    Chris-

I think the OP probably realizes that there is some degree of marketing being done by all individuals at a given firm. I’ve also witnessed this as an intern at several offices myself. Although, this type of ‘marketing’ was generally referred to as ‘business development,’ not necessarily marketing, which in my mind is an entirely different…[Read more]

Landscape Architecture is an art and social science, with varying and unpredictable permutations in the built and non-built environment. The outcome of it’s practice can have significant affects on a broad range of willing and unwilling participants at the most fundamental levels of humanity: Helath, saftey, and well-being. It is the duty of the…[Read more]

I’m pretty sure there are more than a few students and professionals on here that have attended in years past. I believe this year is in PA? From what I hear it’s a great place to network and meet some pretty interesting people.

  • I think this is already underway in many cases and in many regions of North America. There have been some very bright talents affected by the recent surge of layoffs and there is sure to be many more. I have already become aware of at least a handful of non-profit design organizations being set up in the wake of the economic meltdown.

    To me, it…[Read more]

    Josh-

In your case, it probably makes perfect sense. You’ll probably also be able to return to your business with an expanded view and range of capability.

As nrschmid said, some of us are probably just in the wrong place at the wrong time. I’m wondering now how firms will reconcile those few who get hired in the next 12months at what I would…[Read more]

I’ve been contemplating the idea of continuing on for my masters right away as I have about three years of professional office experience as well as previous residential experience. Like Kevin stated though, I think I would tend toward a degree in something complimentary to my BSLA like architecture or planning.

Then again, if I can find a good…[Read more]

  • This is an intriguing query, though a little too much for my weary mind at the moment (the ski season in Colorado is on!!).

Watered down thought is about all I can manage until tomorrow perhaps and then I may still be off the mark, but I believe adaptable and creative thinking may become more useful in the rapidly changing world we live in than…[Read more]

  • I’d be interested in doing something like this, though particularly focused on graphic production. I worked about 5 months for a large firm from home via a laptop they provided doing mostly graphic production. I believe the relationship was healthy and the situation worked well even with tight deadlines and many revisions.

  • As a skateboarder..

Top-seeded concrete really sucks to skate

Generally, I think it comes down to the paving detail. I’ve been seeing skaters and snowboarders/skiers alike riding rails and ledges with welded skate-deterrents. We’re (they’re) getting creative..But if the paving sucks, it’s not so much fun at all..:)
