nca replied to the topic PC vs MAC in the forum TECHNOLOGY 11 years, 6 months ago
Depends on whats under the hood so to speak–I run a custom machine–win 7 64bit, 16 gb ram, nvidia graphics, core i-7 processor, etc. Also a SSD will make a big difference in a PC. From what I understand this is the main difference hardware wise between a mac and pc–its a $75-150 upgrade.

great responses.
laurent-
I am that freelance designer, but I am getting pulled in several directions on a regular basis. I think the type of projects and how theyre structured will need to evolve before I can realistically think about hiring or contracting help as well as office space.
I dont know if its true or just what I am imagining, but…[Read more]

PC.
Youre paying for the brand with a mac. You get a lot more horsepower with a comparably priced PC.

nca replied to the topic Liability/Insurance considerations if hired by company as independent contractor (1099)? in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 11 years, 7 months ago
Bret,
I have worked as a 1099 consultant for a number of la firms over the past few years and I prefer it. I have now moved on to becoming a completely independent entity/consultant. I have done lots of schematic design, illustration, construction packages, and illustration. All the replies are spot on–you shouldnt worry about liability if you…[Read more]

nca replied to the topic Celebrate Aesthetics in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 11 years, 7 months ago
Ive always thought of aesthetic value as a means of fulfilling the innate human desire to ‘anthropmorphize’ our environment and the objects and spaces we occupy everyday. We do this in order to make sense of our world, establish a sense of comfort, and familiarity as well as for more practical reasons like wayfinding, landmarking.
This all ties…[Read more]

nca replied to the topic Entry-Level, Intern, Landscape Designer? in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 11 years, 8 months ago
There really is no such thing as a paid internship. If you are working for a firm they will pay you a salary or sometimes if you are a ‘summer intern’ an hourly rate. If it is a true internship, and is unpaid, the firm has an obligation to literally teach you while you are in the office. Please do not work for free. Alot of companies were…[Read more]

And those firms may just continue to fade into insignificance. The good ole boy club is so 1992..There are lots of progressive practices out there working to re-shape and re-invigorate the profession little by little, state grad, by state grad 😉 let the big boys keep hiring smiling faces..

I have worked with some talented, successful people from Oregon. In my opinion, its not the program that will make you marketable upon graduation, but your personal skill set and drive.
About the ony two schools that might get you a job because of their reputation are Penn and Harvard, but I’ve worked with just as many talented people from both…[Read more]

nca replied to the topic 1st year BLA student second guessing choice in Landscape Arch in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 11 years, 11 months ago
No offense to anyone here, but it has occurred to me lately that probably about 15% of the average graduating class in Landscape Architecture should and will go on to practice professionally. In other words, I think a lot of academic programs out there tend to sell the profession to prospective students as something it’s not, hence some of the…[Read more]

I’d say, if you’re seriously considering engineering as a suitable alternative, go for it. LA is a very difficult career to make a solid living and requires serious dedication and passion for the craft. I dont mean to sound judgemental, but if you’re on the fence I say go for the engineering degree.

nca replied to the topic How close is too close? Planting ornamental trees near a foundation. in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 1 month ago
eastern redbuds do ok here but will fry in exposed sites. I’d steer clear of a japanese maple unless you want to create a home depot special landscape. Not a good scale for that space either imo. I like the amelanchier idea as well.

I wouldnt worry about the tree causing heaving so much as the canopy being far too low and wide for the space. Also consider signage and visibility to the front entry.

I am so sick of these silly partisan blogs I literally feel ill reading them. The debate was a complete joke. Obama was half asleep and romney busted out every goodie in the book as obama took notes. Convince me not to throw my vote away on a third party candidate.

I have been running a 4 year old dell precision m4300 for almost two years now with no problem running 3D, rendering in vray, acad, adobe suite, etc. The dell has a core duo 7200rpm 3Ghz processor, 4GB Ram, nvidia Geforce card, running xp.

nca replied to the topic double and single steps in outdoor patios. in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 2 months ago
Its pretty common for a patio to be 6-8″ above adjacent grade, perfectly fine. The one step rule is intended more for high traffic walkways in my interpretation and interiors, though you see it all the time in interiors too. I agree with andrew, use a larger stone, planting, or paving pattern to distinguish the step if necessary.
