Here’s one of my favorites: http://pedshed.net/
There hasn’t been anything new on there for about a year, unfortunately. -

Mike,
Any tips for someone faced with a situation where they have maybe a minute at the most for sketching without color in front of a client? -

Just a few months ago everyone was praising urban areas, because they provided the right setting for the protests in Egypt. Sometimes things get violent when people are upset about something, but I don’t think that means we should make it harder for them to…[Read more]

I haven’t seen that one, but I haven’t been keeping up with that show. I’ll have to find a way to watch the last several halloween episodes.

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about one of the Simpsons Halloween episodes, where two hideous space aliens disguise themselves as the main presidential candidates during an election (this was aired when Bill Clinton was running against Bob Dole). Eventually, the masks were torn off, and everyone was horrified to see that both candidates were…[Read more]

According to the abstract, they found vegetative cover was more important than vegetative diversity. Apparently, this is not true for bees: http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/08/big-city-bees-healthier-more-productive.php

I’ve been told several times that blurbs will get ignored unless they’re short. During an interview, large blurbs may distract from what you are saying. I try to say as much as I need to in a few sentences.

I think I remember reading somewhere that solar panels on green roofs are more efficient for some reason. I think it had to do with temperature.

True. I didn’t realise she elected to be tried before a jury until I watched the video. I also didn’t realise that she had called the city and been told not to do it before she installed it.
On the other hand, I think it’s absurd that her neighbors complained to the city about a vegetable garden that wasn’t really ugly or offensive. I also thinks…[Read more] -
Roland Beinert replied to the topic Permaculture and Landscape Architecture in the forum SUSTAINABILITY & DESIGN 13 years, 6 months ago
There are many different aspects to sustainability. Maintenance is one aspect of sustainability that we are not all that good at. There are other aspects of sustainable landscape design that we are very good at. We know how to choose materials well, and we are good with stormwater and conservation of native species. So to be fair, we can still…[Read more]

I’d like to go to Seattle on Friday, July 8 or Monday, July 11. Could I visit NBBJ then? -
Roland Beinert replied to the topic Permaculture and Landscape Architecture in the forum SUSTAINABILITY & DESIGN 13 years, 6 months ago
Permaculture is more a way of an approach to design than a design profession. Of course, there are certified permaculture designers out there who do some work similar to landscape architects, but they are few and far between. They tend to concentrate on overall site design and garden design. Permaculture is all about function, so permaculture…[Read more]

I guess the title of this discussion is wrong. This is more like the preliminary stage of looking for a job. I want to get an idea of what different firms in Seattle and Portland are like. It takes the pressure off them if they know I don’t expect them to hand me a job right away, and hopefully they will remember me if they do want to hire someone.

Either one, I guess. I could just send an e-mail to their generic address, but I might get a better response from a real person.
I was looking at their website, and they do seem like a fun office. -

I completely agree about espresso. Another point for technology like Trace was saying. And yet another point for home espresso machines, since I can’t afford to buy espresso at coffee shops.
I found this article about green jobs on treehugger: http://www.treehugger.com/files/2011/06/green-revolution-working-for-people-not-publicity.php -

Why not just take the highway out? Rebuild it as a more pedestrian freindly boulevard or something. That’s got to be easier and cheaper than putting it underground.

Roland Beinert replied to the topic New Urbanism vs. Landscape Urbanism in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 6 months ago
Do you really think this is about landscape architecture vs. architecture? I really don’t think it is. There are plenty of landscape architects who support new urbanism. Personally, I think new urbanist principles are a great starting point for urban design.
