Wow, Jason! embarassing! my memory is from no later than 1990, the last time I was in Philly..they worked then! I actually ‘swam’ in them myself – tried to dip my dog in, and ended up taking the plunge. They are really an odd shape for water elements..too bad they don’t go anymore..

nice question, thank you, Patty..I am really partial to the fountains leading up to the Phila Museum of Art, for one..Big rectangular bins of water going up the steps, on either side, great views, and all the little kids jumping in, in the heat of the summer..

Ripped out irrigation systems along highway, replaced with no-water requirement erosion control planting, with no intention of putting irrigation back after work is done.. Slowly, bit by bit, I am going to rip out all irrigated highway landscapes and replace with no-water..
does a negative action count towards the positive?

This traffic pattern seems very low volume..I like the water – can we use jets like that to control traffic? Pretty thought..but, David, I am just tired of the car everywhere..I have seen this video, and have gotten in this argument before..I like this because it requires humans to think..But it is just too zero-sum for us bicyclists and…[Read more]

We put bulb-outs mid-block in Charlottesville, created a wavy driving pattern, and, man, if you don’t get buy-in from the public, the public just aims at those things and drives over them, shocks be damned..I say put in stop signs..A heck of a lot cheaper – have a cop ticket for a few times, and make them very visible. Nothing wrong with cars…[Read more]

Brandon, I agree with you totally, I got an enormous out of our 3-day workshop..Really a lot, plus I admire him an an LA who has created his own world., and profitably, I hope..But there does seem to be a common theme regarding his sense of humour..Perhaps someone who knows him (who worked for him, such as yourself?) may want to mention to him…[Read more]

I like this one..Other ones are too wordy, and don’t like ‘the sky is mine’ quote – No it isn’t, for goodness sakes..But this is good – ‘design of changes to the land.’ ..Dont’ personally understand what the obsession is with defining landscape architecture – is it some question that professors are enjoying torturing their classes with?

How about a giant solar power collector, as well as a radio-transmitter aimed at broadcasting towards the Vulcan planet, so we can transplant their logic into our brains..

Mr. Radice: Now THAT sounds like Caltrans..I can believe that..The engineers do not know how to say no, only to modify so it might be slightly less dangerous, or move the bottlenecks down 200 feet or so..See recent hideous tragedy on the SF Bay Bridge- Caltrans loves to neck down very fast roads, with no apparent reason for the necking (to the…[Read more]

City of charlottesville (and many others I think) went with parking- requirement- free zone for the entire downtown. Coupled with city-produced parking structures – pretty old hat planning by now..Also as someone mentioned, shared parking requirements (church or weekend vs. evening..) and parking reduction for accessiblity to mass transit..Nothing…[Read more]

Mr. Flor, I am happy to hear Dubai pays some lip service to going green..But I am fairly left of center – where does ANY of the water come from? What sort of habitats are being displaced for these hideous shore-line high-rises? I have never heard anyone complain about the inapropriateness of developing Dubai beyond it’s capacity..I have only heard…[Read more]

@ Mr. Mouzon, I think we also need to look to invasives and weeds for their nutrients – one of my pet projects is to make a pictionary phamplet of edible weeds, to be distributed to bums (of which we have a lot in california..)

@Mr. Mouzon, you disparage growth limits, but I maintain the problem is the law and it’s implementation, not with the concept….Writing a zoning ordinance to get what you want is an art, seldom perfected.. I always liked Vancouvers zoning ordinance..

Roland is certainly correct, we all remember the park in the middle of I think it was Chevy Chase that was just a flat city block covered with fake grass – extremely popular, the right place for public space..
