I am Park Planner for a city of around 55K in the midwest, and as such, the only landscape architect on staff. I oversee planning, design, and construction administration of facilities within the purview of the Parks and Recreation Department, which encompasses parks and recreation facilities, of course, as well as a zoo, two cemeteries, and…[Read more]

I took the 40 hour prep course a few weeks ago. It’s just generic PM concepts drowned in ridiculous jargon you have to memorize in order to pass a test. It’s more alphabet soup after your name, but it’s well known and broadly applied.
If you work with large organizations I think it might be worth it. It’s most common with larger companies (i…[Read more]

I’ve seen it hold more weight/advantage outside the LA profession than in, unless you’re talking some of the much larger and multidisciplinary firms. Since it’s a generalist sort of thing (ie, applies to any industry) it can also help transitioning to another job or career. That said, if you’re interested, have the time and opporunity, and e…[Read more]

‘Being qualified’ is implied, but no matter how good you’re on paper, I think it’s safe to say that having a relationship with those that are hiring helps them determine if you’re a good fit for their ‘culture’. Most studios work as a team, teams need team players that fit the culture. They may not be the best, but of the finalists being the b…[Read more]

Land8: Landscape Architects Network wrote a new post, The Landscape of Death and Green Burial – How Our Beliefs Design Cemeteries 12 years, 6 months ago
For countless generations, humans have disposed of their dead in the landscape — in churchyards, burial grounds, and cemeteries. The design of these “deathscapes” can tell us a lot about the cultural Zei […]

All this talk about ‘networking’ makes me want to barf a little. We skipped over the step where you become really good at something, ie drawings, construction documents, code research, ecological restortion, etc.
Sure it helps to have a network, but the candidate with the best portfolio, requires the least training is going to get hired 9/10…[Read more]

sounds like youre confusing tablets (ipad, galaxy note) with graphics tablets (intuos) and input displays (cintiq, others). I owned the smallest cintig 12wx for a few weeks and didnt like it. I have been a long time (8 years+/-) graphics tablet user. I started with wacoms smallest and chepest and now run an intuos 4 touch, medium size. Lots to…[Read more]

Several have told me the SurfacePro works great. Should also consider the new ultra thin laptops coming out with touch screen capability. Lenovo has one where the screen is hinged and can lay flat on a table. turn it around a bigger drawing surface with full functioning software.
May be a better solution to tablets, light in weight (only 1/2…[Read more]

Glad I saw this discussion…I have been debating whether or not to get a Wacom product. have not yet decided if i want to spend the extra to get a Cintiq or not. Probably will just go with the IntuoPro or something similar. Does anyone on here say that I should just spend the extra dim and get the Cintiq? Another question, Can you use these o…[Read more]

It never hurts to think outside the box for networking. You don’t just want to meet other Landscape Architects. You want to meet potential future clients, other professionals(Archs., Engineers, Nurseryman, etc), and people involved in the building industry. You would be amazed how sometimes these contacts can be just as fruitful in a job hunt than…[Read more]

Another option if you have no relevant experience is to cast a wider net. Look at jobs that will build skills that you can ultimately use as an LA.
Examples would be:
1. CAD tech positions in any field.
2. Landscape/Design Build.
3. Nurseryman jobs.
4. Graphic design/presentation.
5. Construction(landscape, concrete, etc.)
There are other options,…[Read more] -

In my state, Massachusetts, it is possible with 20 years of experience in engineering (10 yrs responsible charge), that type of work has to be at a certain level to demonstrate competency, and an evaluation of your education, passing an interview, and then passing the exam.
That can be summed up by “not really” – possible but unlikely.

Depends on the state. But it can take you a very long time and you generally have to prove that you have the requisite experience hours to sit for the exam. It would be faster to go get an engineering degree.

I had been told something similar…I use AutoCAD LT. It was slightly cheaper for me to get the annual upgrade than it is to purchase every 3 years.

So, I noticed that the holiday party this evening is sold out…contact one of the Chapter’s officers and see if you can still get a ticket…..(or consider contacting the Victor Stanley rep – looks to be the event sponsor – to see if there are any additional tickets…). Good luck: have fun.
