Hi Julia,
I saw your post and wanted to share some info. as just as concerned as you on section 3’s content!I agree that the portion of the new exam pertaining to section D is vague at best. I reached out to CLARB both by email, and then by phone, but was still given a non-specific description. The person I spoke with said the best way she…[Read more]

Can’t think of anything evergreen; but Trumpet Honeysuckle’s got nice flowers through most of the growing season. Trumpet Creeper has really nice flowers and grows quickly but it can be a little aggressive. Virginia or Slivervein Creeper?

I do residential and “residential sized” commercial landscape plans, sit it is a but simpler than some other markets. I spend an hour and a half to two hours discussing a project (usually on site, but sometimes in an office prior to ground breaking on new construction). Then it is half an hour to an hour customizing my proposal for design work to…[Read more]

Thanks for adding your comments Mark.
I currently incorporate the cost of the design into the construction project, but I’m not sure I’m recovering the appropriate cost of that either.
I build my projects on mostly cookie cutter lots, and it appears that the clientèle are not willing to pay more than $150 to $ 300 for a custom design. Some…[Read more]

Hi Mike,
I took a good hard look at this several years ago, and was amazed how large a percentage of overhead it represented. And, I don’t think your 50% “closing the sale” figure was much different than mine at that time.
The best thing I did was to charge for anything past the first meeting (we specialize in construction, so most projects need…[Read more] -

The principals in my company maintain their own schedules and as such, when I as an assistant designer answer phone calls from clients wanting to set up on site meetings or potential new clients call in asking for an initial consultation, I can never be sure of when actual blocks of time are available. This is especially annoying when they are out…[Read more]

Honestly I think the pendulum may be swinging in the direction of wetlands and other “soft” strategies. There is greater general understading of the role of natural systems and how they’ve been altered anthropogenically. A lot of the people affected know their homes are in risky, vulnerable locations. They know that barrier islands shift ov…[Read more]

Andrew Garulay, RLA replied to the topic Landscape Architecture: Making Space for Garden Design? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 8 months ago
The question seems to be whether there are job opportunities for Garden Designers in Landscape Architecture firms. I certainly would not say that an LA firm should not or would not hire a Garden Designer. However, I think there are three reasons why it might be more difficult than it appears on the surface. It is still a diverse profession. Some…[Read more]

right, you cant desalinate the salt lake and melt water reduction in many years may dry that out anyway – recycling what you have is king unless you convince residents to bath with a friend a few times per fill and not shower lol. The stat on irrigation is obviously key in that so much h2o is lost to evaporation and better ways of irrigation, eg…[Read more]

For policy, a good one is Managing Growth in American Communities by Douglas Porter. Cities for People by Jan Gehl is probably the best book on urban design I’ve ever read. And, of course, everyone interested in planning should read The Death and Life of Great American Cities at some point.

This whole “smaller government” rhetoric is a red herring.
Government grew in response to specific needs which the electorate wanted and needed.
Going back to 1790 may be a nice image but leaves a great many questions.
Shall corporations decide when and where to build roads? Shall corporations decide whether or not you may use their roads and…[Read more] -
