I agree with the statement that you do not need a masters degree to be successful but in the same token I would say you need to diversify your experience and skill sets in order to remain successful through a recession. My family has had a landscape contracting for 35 years, we have been there and done that. I graduated 2005 BSLA, RLA in 2012, I…[Read more]

Thanks Tosh. I agree that one of the points of the new style test is to minimize random mistakes that cause a fail. I have been able to get my hands on a few redlined vignettes, and some of the mistakes people make are fairly simple to not make (not following setbacks or other info from the reference manual). Luckily i read code for work everyday,…[Read more]

If the video stuff looks similar to old stuff, then the older vignettes are probably a good base line to use. Not having to draw it should allow you to concentrate on the information at hand and not make irrelevant mistakes (which I think is one of the intents of the new format). Anything in the “manual” sections are game (it’s their version o…[Read more]

Tim Hoelle replied to the topic E&O/Professional Liability Insurance Costs in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 13 years, 9 months ago
If you’re talking about a “stand-alone” professional liability insurance policy, your pricing is probably going to be at least $1500 for a policy providing $1 MILL limit, and the deductible would be $2500 or so. As you stated, revenue, loss history, how long insured, extent of services, location and limits will all impact the premium.

Civils got hit hard in my neck of the woods. I was lucky enough to be in the oldest one around when it hit the fan. All the other ones around had layoffs and hours cut back, though. It was not good. They are still down, but not as bad. It helps that we are in a heavily regulated area where lots of wealthy people from other states want to have a…[Read more]

Not from what I’ve seen. As many or more civils around here were out of a job and offices closed as there were LAs. And most of the civil-with-an-LA places I contacted in neighboring states were the same. I think it has more to do with area of practice; civils and LAs are very similar in that they both have many fields of operation. If you…[Read more]

I would get a civil engineering degree – with that you can go anywhere. and it is way more recession proof than LA…

Walk over from Brooklyn to Manhattan, as everyone has said, on the Brooklyn Bridge, (it’s a really dramatic walk, really awesome) and then go on up the west side, through Battery Park, to all the incredible parks on the West Side, one after the other, on the waters edge – including the High Line, of course, which is a couple of blocks or so in f…[Read more]

Paley Park / Greenacre Park, Gantry Plaza Park, The Hudson River Park and the piers. I’ll second the Irish Hunger Memorial. New FDR memorial might be worth looking at.
Food – Joe’s Shanghai & Pho Bang are 2 of my regular spots in Chinatown; Yelp reviews are very helpful in the city.

Never seemingly to dissappoint, this week’s commentary from James Howard Kunstler on the first presidential debate of last week (and his not-so-uplifting implications for where we are headed no matter who is steering our rudderless ship-of-state (fools) is worth glimpsing he…[Read more] -

A masters in LA seems to almost be a prerequisite for even entry level jobs in this economy.

You don’t need a Masters to be successful, but I do see job listings for senior-level positions requiring a masters degree… so down the road you may need it.
For me, the theoretical larch topics such as landscape urbanism or parametrics interest me, so I would probably go back to school to learn that. I would also go back to school if I wanted…[Read more]

Anthony,
“Looking back on your experiences and the current state of the profession, if you were to return to school to enhance your knowledge and degree, what would your focus be?”
Something I was sure of.
“Currently, I am interested in resort design, but for a graduate focus I am interested in a Masters in Urban design (Architectural and Urban…[Read more] - Load More
