Andrew Garulay, RLA replied to the topic The Ponzi Scheme that Created the Suburbs in the forum SUSTAINABILITY & DESIGN 13 years, 5 months ago
The whole thing hinges on the premise that subrbia happened from a deliberate belief “suburban development provides prosperity”. Who came up with that and when?
Suburbia came from people who could afford to move out of the city doing so. I’m sure there are almost as many reasons why they moved out there as there are people who moved there. I…[Read more] -

I’d rather have a BLA than an MLA (unless w/ BLA undergrad) as a job seeker in this economy. I can understand that an MLA would be more desparate than a BLA. The required internship for licensure plays a big role here as well (internships are a mixed blessing).
Academia has moved toward selling MLAs with the students believing that they will…[Read more] -

The amusing part of this thread is that it is mostly about looking for government to spend on “green jobs” and people are complaining about taxes at the same time. Be careful what you wish (or hope) for.

They are great, but the thread is specifically about what is right for Leigha. Unless things at USC and her career path are not in sync with the majority of landscape architecture, she most likely will wind up buying a PC whether or not she starts by buying a MAC ….just like you had to do.

Autocad is not the same on a MAC, whether or not a MAC is a better operating system. How is LAnd FX working out for you MAC users? Is anyone using other add-ons to ACAD-MAC successfully? It seems that full Autocad has yet to come.

Not sure what you are “not really” about. All I said was that more LA and CE offices ( a lot more) use PCs – not that I prefered them – just that they are used more if you plan on working for someone else.

Just know that you will more likely need to learn how to work on a PC
That is pretty much what I said. -

We are now so politically correct that we judge success by speculating about how much worse it would have been. If unemployment was at 15%, the current mind set is “it would have been 20%”. If your house value dropped 30% instead of 20%, “it could have dropped 50%”. If gas were at $5 instead of $4, “it could have been $6”.

Clearly, Mac vs. PC is the same as a debate over religion. The thing you need to do is to understand where your career path is likely to go and what is being used along that path. Currently, the majority is using PCs, not to say that a particular path may be Mac oriented or that things won’t change. If you don’t know your path or what is most used…[Read more]

… and it would only be available in a little corner of the world if there were know entrepreneurs charging exponentially more for it. The US harnessed the wheel of personal gain and now we have been brainwashed to hate everything about it without thinking it over.
There is bad out there, but most of it is good. -

The hopers make fun of the prayers and the prayers make fun of the hopers. They are in fact the same thing.
They are what you do in order to solidly believe in an outcome without thinking.
You can hope. You can pray. … or you can think. Who is doing the latter?

Internships are great on the one hand, but there is a lot of baggage that comes with it.
The biggest problem many are having right now is not being able to get an internship after graduating. Can you imagine how hard it would be to get an internship after graduating if there were students taking them? Or, can you imagine not being able to…[Read more] -

You need to remind them that you not only have education and experience, but you can’t be an engineer and open a competing shop like the civils they may interview could. -

Is it not hypocritical to advocate sustainable designs and not implement them into the design of A BUILDING OF A FIRM?

Andrew Garulay, RLA replied to the topic Does client input really limit the vision? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 5 months ago
Well, there is no right answer to this in my opinion. Some people hire a designer (architect, LA, clothing, whatever,..) to get a “brand” or a “name”. Some hire facilitators who will get them to understand their own needs and work with them and take on their aesthetic values. Those are the extremes, but there is always another point between two…[Read more]
