Not applying to a job twice shouldn’t ever be an obvious thing unless you didn’t really want it in the first place. As landplanner said, any one of your questions could be a valid reason for a reposting, some more likely than others. I personally know of instances where:
a) they were set to hire and a major project/client fell apart taking the w…[Read more] -
Chris Whitted replied to the topic Design/ Build Course as Graduate project in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 3 months ago
This wasn’t uncommon at the college I attended, but with less build and more design. Many times both grads and undergrads would do something based in the real world that mostly ended up as information/alternatives given to the ‘client’. I recall our entire studio doing some community park work, including facilitating a public involvement s…[Read more]

I don’t know about ‘seamless’, nor do I know how well the current versions are working, but I use an add-on called AutoXlsTable. In my version (2.53) it’s not completely automatic – you do have to click a tool and then the table to update it. But it’s fast, easy enough to use once you get the parameters down, and worked very well for the land us…[Read more]

Chris Whitted replied to the topic statute of limitations in VA in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 12 years, 5 months ago
I am not a lawyer, but I do not believe the people you spoke to were correct. I would highly recommend asking someone with the proper legal expertise for that state, possibly your insurance provider.
One thing that might help is the term you’re looking for isn’t ‘statute of limitations’ but rather ‘statute of repose’. Generally it looks like in…[Read more] -
Chris Whitted replied to the topic Image quality when saving InDesign doc as PDF Interactive vs. PDF Print in the forum PORTFOLIO & RESUME 12 years, 6 months ago
On the contrary, there’s a huge difference between those two images – the second shows a great deal of jpeg artifacting from high levels of compression.
Looking at the first image being set to maximum, my first thought is it looks like a broken link in InDesign. When you link as opposed to insert an image it still places a small, low-resolution…[Read more] -

Can you post an example page with both presets so we can see what’s coming out? Maybe describe how that specific page was put together as well – what are images, what formats each of the images are in, what’s pdfs linked into another pdf, etc.
Also, I’m a little confused. Your original post said bitmaps (and did you mean bitmaps, as in .bmp or…[Read more] -
Chris Whitted replied to the topic Software for Scheduling Appointments in the forum TECHNOLOGY 12 years, 6 months ago
I’ve typically used Outlook in the past for the sharing of and managing joint calenders, but while it is available for Macs it would require an Exchange server – in short some expense and permissions configuration / management depending on what you already have. One place used Google Calender instead, but I never used it extensively. Without g…[Read more]

Chris Whitted replied to the topic Image quality when saving InDesign doc as PDF Interactive vs. PDF Print in the forum PORTFOLIO & RESUME 12 years, 6 months ago
The most likely issue is the Adobe Preset for pdf that you’re using. In particular, the options in the Compression group. There are two factors that affect quality for each of three types of images – downsampling, where if your original image is over a certain ppi it will reduce it to a lower ppi; and image quality, which sets the level of l…[Read more]

Chris Whitted replied to the topic Scale Drawings in Portfolio in the forum PORTFOLIO & RESUME 12 years, 6 months ago
If you did/do not use graphical scales, one way to handle the scale thing is with a caption. If most of your text on a given page is describing the media or drawing itself as opposed to the project, you can include it in there. Otherwise a little caption somewhere on the page that says something like ‘Original 36×48 marker on pressboard’ or ‘…[Read more]

There used to be a few discussions on this topic, but I can only find one recent one at the moment:

The short answer is it depends, and it’s best to ask. As far as rights, laws vary from place to place as well as depending on contract wording, but typically your employer owns anything…[Read more] -

Chris Whitted replied to the topic Masters in Environmental Design vs MLA in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 7 months ago
Environmental design is kind of a generic term, and from what I gather it has a lot of variation in what you actually learn depending on the program – even moreso than architucture or landscape architecture programs. At the college I attended it’s aimed much more at the architectural aspect of things and shares courses with that major – not L…[Read more]

Chris Whitted replied to the topic CLARB Council Record: Priceless or worthless? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 7 months ago
I have no direct interaction with them, but someone I was working under a few years ago had an experience pretty much like Ben’s. The expense and fees for what you get and the fact I haven’t actually needed it yet are why I haven’t started one.

The bottom line is there is no single approach to please all of the people all of the time. Your profs are wrong to make such an absolute blanket statement, and I’ve had enough contacts and responses to prove it. Age/generation alone does not decide this issue – it’s one unto itself. Some people/firms are intensely anti-digital, some are playing…[Read more]

Nick – Maybe you were looking at an earlier draft or the bylaws? Or perhaps thinking of the CLARB requirements to sit for the test, as they will take any degree plus three years of experience. I wouldn’t call “A professional degree from a program accredited by the landscape architectural accreditation board, or any successor organization, or education or experience determined by the board to be substantially equivalent” just ANY degree, though it may technically meet that definition.
As others have already mentioned it’s up to the…[Read more] -

The thing with color calibration, profiling, and management is that it’s so complex that you can spend a lot of time and money for very subtle improvement. As far as displays, without getting to far into details of panel types and such, the only relatively cheap and reliable way to make sure yours is calibrated as well as it possibly can be is to…[Read more]

I’m going to have to at least partially disagree with Jason on this one. You cannot sufficiently compress a full portfolio for an email attachment and not have it look like crap. Why would you spend all the time, money, and effort to create a high-quality print version (unless it’s just your carry and not distribute version) and then turn aro…[Read more]

You might be talking to the wrong kind of print shop. It sounds like you’ve spoken with color separation printers, such as those that do business cards and flyers/newsletters/magazines. You might look at reproduction houses – the same local shop we did our plan set copies with also did some impressive color output. They’re like Kinko’s, but on a…[Read more]
