Yeah I’d stay away from the Retina for now. To replace the battery will cost you 200 bucks!
You can never go wrong with a Mac, but don’t rule out the pc just because you hear horror stories of crashes and viruses. Those problem were common with XP, but Windows 7 is very stable, and the upcoming 8 will probably be even better. People get viruses…[Read more] -

Are you considering buying the new $2000+ Macbook with Retina? The one where you can’t remove the battery or service it if something goes wrong? A $500 pc can do Sketchup, Autocad, and Adobe programs just fine… I’m not saying that Macs are bad, I like Macs, just saying something that a $2000 machine is overkill for the kind of programs you want to use.

Roland, as someone who has taken a few Chinese classes, I would try to master the phonetics, the 4 tones, and pinyin of Mandarin first before learning any words. If you can’t afford any classes, pick up a book with an audio cd, or go on iTunes and download some pinyin apps. Some apps even have audio clips for you to get your sound right. In…[Read more]

I like architects and their nerdiness, though they can be condescending at times, but it comes from their passion in design. I hate it when LA’s look down on people like them like we are somehow better.

I don’t trust my own eyes or knowledge, so I will wait for an in depth study. It’s interesting that you point to these issues as it is difficult to look beneath what is being said, I’m kind of in the middle now in terms of The Highline’s sustainability. However I still love it and it’s been a while since a landscape project has received so much p…[Read more]

Do you know of any study that looks into the sustainability of The Highline? I’d be interested to read any study that refutes Friends of The Highline’s claim that the project is sustainable. My understanding of the designers’ intent was to design for the micro-climate of the site with drought-tolerant, locally grown native plants, and that the…[Read more]

It might have been a marketing choice to choose the Highline as the cover to grab more attention. Sure there are a lot more sustainable projects, but what recent landscape project other than the Highline has garnered media attention and is so well known to the public?
I think if people are willing to put the time and resources to maintain a l…[Read more] -

This may help you. In the last paragraph the author provides a link to his Amazon list of recommended hardware based on your budget and the level of work you intend to do. Though his reccomendations are based on 3d modeling and rendering, they should be fine for Autocad and 2d work like photoshop. The “Budget 3d Artist” list should be more than…[Read more]

I hope Brittany is not your real name because your employer or coworker can be looking at your post at this moment and decide to let you go. Be careful when you talk about your current employer (or even previous employers) on social media while using your real name.

ida replied to the topic I-Pad or Tablet more efficient?? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 7 months ago
I just bought a Galaxy Tab 8.9 running Android 3.2. I’ve taken it out to the field and one of the major problems is that the screen is not viewable under direct sunlight. I’m not sure if all tablets or iPads are the same, but for mine, it is a useless device outside when it’s sunny.
I do however find it useful when I’m indoors and out of the…[Read more]

I’ve used my smartphone to draw comments on pdfs my coworkers email me when I’m on travel. It’s a pain to draw with your finger on such a small screen. I too have thought about buying a tablet, but I’m going to wait till they improve the latency on those things. I still like my small notepad and paper, so I can wait 🙂

The question you should ask yourself is how will you pay for the rest? How old are you, and if you are in your in your late 20’s to mid 30’s do you have a savings plan, diversified investments, retirement plan, etc? If you have enough in liquid and savings, go for it… but if you have to take on loans, be careful.
If money is an issue, Cal Poly…[Read more]

ida replied to the topic What can an LA do that an architect cannot, and vice versa? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 8 months ago
The difference depends on what scale you’re working at or what issue you are trying to solve. Anybody can do curb appeal or design a cool paving pattern for a plaza. However, once you start getting into larger scale projects such as large parks or are dealing with animal habitats, you need the expertise of a landscape architect.
The 1st year of…[Read more]

I’m sure including the name Landscape Architecture in the title will not grab attention that the article deserves. The title should have read “Architects Are A Bunch of Thieves”. That should wake up the architects and the public to credit properly.

Aaron, McNeel also offers video tutorials for download, and it should cover all you need from basics to producing plans and renders. However, it will cost you 80 bucks and there is no sound?. http://www.la.rhino3d.com/visual_tips/visual_tips.html
