Again, we do not know what will be exempted or not. There will be exemptions (not deductions), as there always are with flat tax systems. It is also very easy to put in exemptions (you make less than ‘x’, no 9% income tax), without loopholes and ‘earned income tax credit.’ The point is to keep it simple. One interesting thing e-tailers are co…[Read more] -

I have yet to see the complete details of the 999 plan, but anything has to be better then the system we currently have. Even the Fed chairman, the former chair of the taxation comittee in the House, who actually WRITE the tax code can’t even understand the current system. It is indecypherable, which is why so many high profile people are caught w…[Read more]

It is kind of interesting how these parks worked in the past and what developers agreed to do for a a couple thousand extra square feet in a building. There are MANY private parks in NYC attached to projects, but I was unaware that the public access had to be left open 24hrs. Most aren’t open past dusk, and are patrolled and LOCKED…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Alternatives to the tired old 'park information signs"? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 1 month ago
Rather than the signs being the problem, I think its the content and quantity. We tend to over-sign things, thus my comment about getting a LEED point for putting in a sign next to every “eco-gutter,” no matter how small. They are everywhere…every project. Frankly, no one cares. You’ve see one, you seen them all according to the general public.…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic New professial designation for liscensed LA's in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 1 month ago
You would need to have a license to use just ASLA, non licensed would be Associate ASLA. If you were not a member of ASLA and had a license, you would then use your state’s preferred nomenclaiture, such as RLA or LLA, which is set in state law. Architects who are licensed and are not members of AIA generally use RA, and engineers use PE. But with…[Read more]

You bring up a good point…parks evoke different responses in people as to what they are. Perhaps because of the evolution of the word itself. The ‘merican version from dictionary.com:
an area of land, usually in a largely natural state, for the enjoyment of the public, having facilities for rest and recreation, often owned, set apart, and m…[Read more] -

Get your own domain name (I have 3, soon to be 4)…they are cheap in the scheme of things and can all be pointed to the one website (I bought a few because I am parking names if I need them at some point). All told, I spend about $50 a year for 3 domains and 1 host package. I also wait for GoDaddy (who I register through) to have a good sale…[Read more]

According to the link published on the VA chapter of ASLA, RLA cannot be a universal designation as not all licensed LAs are considered “registered”, some are “licensed”. Registered and licensed are legal terms in the sense that a state chooses to recognize one of those designations, and not all states are the same. It is entirely dependant on the…[Read more]

Interesting.
Not sure if PLA is the right way to go. Anyway, it can add three more letters on the end of your name without doing anything. I use RLA and ASLA and will continue to do so. I know many who are licensed who only use ASLA. But you don’t have to have a license to be a full ASLA memeber. Thats the problem. I think a more reasonable th…[Read more] -

I think all of that could have been accomplished with a bit more design flair. I agree that trees would be out of place, but the lack of any green or pavement variation is just a blank slate. It will be terribly uncomfortable the 364 days that there is no New Years Eve party there. Much of what I had previously suggested could hav been…[Read more]

If you work as a contractor or consultant, be prepared to receive 1099’s in the mail come January. The 1099 is the kind of like a W2 in which the contractee files with the gubmint that they paid you, the contractor, that year. You then use the 1099 to report your income, like a W2. The tax software will tell you where to put this info, usually in…[Read more]

St. Paul’s Cathedral (if you’re going to see Westminster Abbey)
Tower of London
London Eye (so you can see LOTS of architecture from ONE spot!)
And if the weather sucks…The British Museum. That will burn lots of time and you get to see things you will not see anywhere else. -

Didn’t expect many. It is more of an FYI than anything else. With the hostilites on here recently, I’m staying away from anything “controversial”.
I already have a few black turtlenecks (they come in handy) and really black tiny half-framed ‘advertisers’ glasses, so maybe I’ll apply. Too bad they aren’t in DC though. -

There is a general lack in teaching design…period. Students are taught to make the presentaions look nice on the computer, and so much time is spent teaching the tools that little time or attention is paid to the quality of the design the student actually produces. No attention to the details, function, forms, or even overall plausibilty. Much…[Read more]

The pros miss them, too. I’ve had underground power with an easment, missed. And it just so happened the architect had the corner of the building right over it! Power line moved. I’ve had buildings severely mismeasured, by 20′!!!!! And grading off by up to 3′. Again, with really large or complicated projects, you cannot afford those kind of er…[Read more]

I guess it really does depend on what type of work you do. If you deal with small sites, you make a compelling argument. Those whom work on residential or small commercial or design/build that need layout capabilities can definitely benefit from your approach.
But the sites I generally work on are on the larger size…much larger size. And t…[Read more] - Load More
