Too many to name just one. And not just individuals, but firms.

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic What's best Hardware/Computer for a landscape architect? in the forum TECHNOLOGY 16 years ago
Of course, you can do even better than this online. Newegg, ZipZoomFly, Buy.com, Amazon, Tiger Direct, CompuCenter. Even Dell or HP directly, they often have killer sales. I got my HP Pavilion at Office Depot, the good sales are in August for back to school. I got a custom built loaded laptop for little more than a base model at Best Buy. Check…[Read more]

Keep in mind, too, that a majority of the software is written for PC, and updated first for PC. This includes Adobe, suprisingly, as Adobe is graphics software, the dominant realm of the Mac. You can get a much better machine for the price, better compatibility, and you can easily upgrade a pc with a new board or processor (if you buy the right…[Read more]

Good points. Not familiar with the Kimbell, plus I really don’t like Louis Kahn (everybody, in Shatner voice…Kahn!!!!). I detest brutalism. Anyway, I looked at it on Bing, and the building does transition well into the landscape. The landscape is extraordinarily simple and clean, well suited to the building. Very mid-century. Kinda makes you…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Sustainable Landscapes in the forum SUSTAINABILITY & DESIGN 16 years, 1 month ago
“Sustainability” is a misnomer, and getting clichéd. What IS sustainable? Don’t answer that, it’s a rhetorical question. There are a few very respected LAs, well versed in natural systems, which very much dislike the term “sustainable” because it doesn’t mean anything. It’s greenwashing. Something they teach the kids on earth day.
No planted…[Read more]

There is nothing there of concequence. Its pretty much one of those great weird intersections DC is known for. It is pretty much just open space with a few street trees. Here’s an image of the memorial area with the Dept. of Ed. Behind.

The screens are supposed to be mostly transparent from up close, and the building to the rear is 100′ away. They are a patterned mesh. But if they are so transparent at 100′, how are you supposed to see what they are when you are IN the memorial?

You know, this discussion gives me an idea for an article in Contour. I’m thinking I might answer your question there with a whole “Landscape Architects Guide to Egomaniacalism” tongue-in-cheek checklist. ( I need material, and I don’t want to go to DC now as the tourists are back, the MLK memorial is a mud-hole, and it’s cherry blossom season)
Thanks!

The SANAA buildings, I laughed at that same photo with the three twigs sticking out of lawn. If you look more at their work, the buildings all look about 1/3 done. I know its minimalist, but that is ridiculous.
You’re right with the Getty…an artist designed the main garden at Getty with a horticulturist, and Olin did the rest of the grounds.…[Read more]

I can thing of plenty of musuems, art or otherwise, that fit the role of the iconic building, that still function as museums. Many of the “famous” (really, infamous) modern museums try to be that art, while the collection or the works suffer. Pei’s East Gallery of the National Gallery is falling apart, and taxpayer dollars are required to reclad…[Read more]

Methinks an unemployed architect could teach them something more relevant first. They won the Pritzker for that stuff? It’a awful! And not much of a portfolio, either. When are museums going to learn that this “signature” building stuff only leads to failure and massive expense? Roof leaks, poor lighting for the works (um, sunlight degrades color,…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic entering the LA field in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 16 years, 1 month ago
The original poster’s timeline of three years is pretty good. The economy (if the gov’t quits messing with it) should recover on it’s own by then. It won’t ever be as mad as it was pre-crash, but it WILL get better. In the mean time, there will be plenty of retirements, and many who will leave the field or schooling for it, allowing for the…[Read more]

A lot of those are closing as well. My point is that in this economy, nobody is safe. Even the once-untouchable state and municipal governments around here are laying off, big time. Adding to that, many of the Fed jobs are only temporary, meaning you’ll be looking for work in a year.
It won’t last forever, but it is the nature of the business. It…[Read more]

I personally don’t see an issue with using a graphic or two to tell the story of the project, or to give it context. You might put text on the image stating that this was created by someone other than yourself, and make it clear in an interview that you were not responsible for the graphic or the design. Put sheets of the CDs you had created in…[Read more]

United States Botanic Garden at the base of Capitol Hill (botanical is technically incorrect, as my former British botanic garden head would insist). The National Arboretum doesn’t really have big greenhouses for public perusal its pretty ,much all outside (and huge). Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Do we focus more on the technical side of design rather than the idea behind it? in the forum RESEARCH 16 years, 1 month ago
As someone who relies heavily on computers, even in schematic, it certainly makes selling the project to the client and to a municipal board MUCH easier. The old ‘cartoony’ style of presentations left a lot to the imagination and individual interpretation. The concepts were ‘optimized’ using artistic license to the point that the finished product…[Read more]

Brilliant. I was thinking this for a while as well. My line of thinking was to offer review services on some large scale projects, such as whats going on with the National Mall. We do have public input (taken with a grain of salt, I’m sure), but I think targeted PROFESSIONAL peer opinions, or even charettes, would be very beneficial to these kind…[Read more]

Interesting concept. I don’t think that LAs generally have the egos to do stuff like this. But that explains why there are so many architects who do write their own books (or hire people to do it)

Kinda hard to comment on it. It’s someones opinion. It really depends what you want to get out of it. I went to ESF 10 years ago for my BLA, and there are some good professors there, but that was 10 years ago. Things change. I’d recommend visiting each program, tour the facilities, and look at the student work. Ask relevant questions such as the…[Read more]
