Miles Barnard replied to the topic What Graduate Degree would you recommend as the best complement to an Undergrad in Landscape Architecture? Pros and Cons? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 3 months ago
If I were hiring someone right now (settle down everyone, I’m not) I wouldn’t really care about their post grad degrees is any. I care about their work experience, graphic abilities and personality. I think grad school is for people that want to teach or don’t know what they want to do. Was that too harsh?

It IS pretty hilarious that brown is a major color scheme for the land8 website. But it works!

Agreed on the roof. That was there when I came on the project. headed to Historic District Commission literally right now to see if we get approved on the fence. I stuck with the metal. It’s a pretty abusive urban environment. I will post the results along with some elevations! -Miles

Miles Barnard replied to the topic Changes to the LARE exam coming 2012- all computerized and only 4 sections… in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 4 months ago
School prepares you for the parts of the exam that test you on things you will never use as a professional. Your first jobs will prepare you for all the parts of the exam that test you on being a good LA. That’s a gross generalization but I think not far from reality.

Sheesh. My bad people. We’re good. But who wants to run AC when they can run Vectorworks anyway, right?

Miles Barnard replied to the topic Macs Vs PCs in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 5 months ago
Yup. Save the dough. I struggled with this decision for a while and decided to stick with the PC. And if you are not sure about software you will be running, at least Vectorworks is available on both Mac and PC. AutoCad is only available for PC.

Anybody want to talk about the effectiveness of the LARE and it’s content? After I passed it I was determined to change it and make it more pertinent to what we actually do. I failed on that endeavor ostly due to lack of effort, but I still think the thing sucks.

Miles Barnard replied to the topic No Mow, Low Mow, Sometime Mow? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 5 months ago
Roland thanks for the comment. My only point about the weeds is that in a mowed lawn, weeds are a nonissue because they get mowed off every week. In a “lawn” that is not mowed you have to deal with weeds in some way. And that means pulling if you are not mowing.

Miles Barnard replied to the topic Visiting firms when you're not looking for a job in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 5 months ago
Roland I did exactly what you are proposing before I graduated in 1997. I just called firms up (most of them cold called) and said I was a student looking to get some exposure to different offices and could I come visit. Worked great. If you wanted to come to my office I would just keep you away from the “Confidential Project Room”. But un…[Read more]

How big of an area are you all thinking when you talk about Thyme lawns? There is a 100% chance that there will be a good weed crop every year. Are we going to hand weed that? -Miles

Well I have been growing a mix (sheep, hard, red, chewings) in my yard for several years. It’s a bout a 1500-2000 sf patch. I’m pusing the limits on where it should be grown as it’s in the wetest and sunniest area of our garden. What I have found is that in this climate (zone 7) it really wants to be mowed regularly (not as much as the turf). I…[Read more]
