All I can say is that whomever has the total skill package should be competing with these firms rather than looking for a job from them. There is not a ton of overhead necessary in this business.

This post was started a long time ago, but I’ll circle back and agree that CAD and technical ability trumps creativity, knowledge of materials, plants, construction in the vast majority of cases.
Remember, as Mitt said, corporations are people too so whatever you can expect a potential hire to do you can expect the same from many employers, ie…[Read more] -

Ha!
I hung in there for our one semester long group project in school only to redo it from scratch by myself over christmas break for my portfolio. I dont know if I could go as far as accusing my peers of stifling my genius though, lol. -

I have been thinking about this for a while since I started working from home nearly full time.
I’m isolated and go through spells of madness when I have a deadline or difficult problem to sole and no one to lean on, but ultimately I prefer the situation I’m in.
Occasionally I’ll work in the office and often finding myself frustrated by the…[Read more]

I like what Tosh writes PLUS I would say take a look at the *original* extreme sports villages like Chamonix, France.
Living in a mountain village I can tell you that the most exciting thing about the place is the sense of adventure in the air caused by groups packing backpacks for long hikes, or a couple unfolding maps while sipping espresso…[Read more]

i wouldnt consider go carting an ‘extreme sport’ by any stretch. maybe think about rock climbing, rafting, kayaking, skateboarding, paragliding, base jumping, hiking, mountaineering, camping, backpacking, skiing, mountain biking, road biking, bungee jumping, surfing, etc, etc.
I live in Aspen, CO–a mountain resort town. design workshop, edsa,…[Read more]

nca replied to the topic Municipal landscape requirements in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 11 months ago
I know. Like I’ve said before I’ve worked on a couple of projects in Rifle, sort of in your area. The gas station and car dealership clients were the toughest in terms of bare minimums becoming maximums. I blogged the original article on my site http://www.nickaceto.com and will follow when they post your response. Well done.

EXCELLENT rebuttal Rick.
Very well written. In my limited experience it seems landscape code is typically written for the gas station chains, ie conocos and kum and go’s rather than private local developers who want to do good projects.

How is a ‘risk/reward’ contract much different from a ‘hard bid’ or fixed quote contract?
With a quick search I found a discussion on risk/reward contracts based on a software vendors perspective at softwareceo.com. A member posted this reply in response to a similar query:
“Having managed many large scale fixed price software implementation…[Read more]

nca replied to the topic who likes the new layout? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years ago
I think the new layout definitely marginalizes the forum, which is probably the point. I would have actually liked to see some of the multimedia content scaled down or gone completely from the home page and the discussions tab played up even more.
I’m not looking at portfolios much here. I’d like to see portfolio critiques happen through the discussions. -

nca replied to the topic I need some advice about the working environment in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 13 years ago
Give it 6 months minimum as long as he/she is not beating you physically. If it gets a little better, give it another 6 months. If you’re not learning or doing the type of work you want to do after a year, find another job or do something else.

Ijust bought a 4 year old used Dell Precision M4300. So far it has been excellent, fingers crossed. The last laptop I owned was a refurbished Dell Inspiron 8600 that lasted from about 2004-2010 before it basically melted down. My girlfriends 2000 dollar HP ‘gaming laptop’ lasted all of 18 months.
Dell gets a bad rep for some reason, but I have…[Read more] -
