Ryland Fox replied to the topic Is SolidWorks the best 3D CAD software out there today? in the forum TECHNOLOGY 14 years, 9 months ago
I thought that SolidWorks was pretty much just used by engineers? Max, maya, sketchup are much more common.

You are getting a cross section of an industry at a downtime, so no matter what industry it is there are going to be upset people. Outside of that I think that in general, unhappy people express their upset feelings on messageboards more than happy people do. Being unhappy makes you want to tell others about it while telling people how happy you…[Read more]

I like the plant library in vue and the ability to populate large areas, but it would be hard to get into a firm, so expensive and importing other geometries isn’t the best. I just like messing with it.
Are the 3d and 4th using the vue/3d max plug in? I haven’t really gone into it that far yet but it seems good.

this is free and quite good, seems like it would be adequate – http://www.intellicad.org/
The interface looks just like 2005 autocad, at least it did when I got it last year.

Ryland Fox replied to the topic Which render tool is compatible with Sketchup and Vectorworks? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years ago
Vray isn’t a stand alone renderer as far as I know. You can’t export to it. You export to a software that has it – Max, Maya, Rhino, Sketchup etc.
Renderworks is pretty weak if you are going for anything beyond basic, from looking it seems like Artlantis makes a export plugin for Vectorworks or some people export to Cinema4D. You would just have…[Read more]

Is anybody using VUE? It is pretty good though most materials would have to be custom made. Good interface with Max and is import/export.

Ryland Fox replied to the topic 3-D Rendering Advice in the forum TECHNOLOGY 15 years ago
The reason autodesk makes Max and Maya is because they bought them. The same way they bought softimage, ecotect etc…..
It doesn’t seem to me to be so much of a compatibility strategy but just becoming the largest modelling conglomerate.
Anyways, my experience is that Max is an awful modeler. But I don’t really think that the Max/Rhino…[Read more]

Calling Rhino a mid level modeling program is crazy. It is a much more accurate/powerful tool than Max. It has t-splines…….
And while Max has the majority of users in the past progressive firms are moving to Maya because of the scripting and dynamics.

Are you talking about modeling or are you talking about rendering? These are two different issues. If you are talking about rendering the answer is Vray because it is a plugin for SU/Max/Maya/Rhino. It is also the most common architectural render engine.
If you are talking about modeling then you might as well start with SU because it will only…[Read more]

I have been messing wit Revit for a little bit now am pretty impressed. It will be an excellent LA tool with a little bit of work. The ability to import terrain from other applications is good though editing in Revit is a little bit clunky at this point. I think that the only thing that really needs to happen is that introduction of landscape…[Read more]

I just got Revit and am starting to play around with it. Has anybody started to use it? I might have to take a training course though. We will see.
Also started playing with Maya’s MEL scripting. I got a book called “MEL Scripting for Animators” which is really good so far but slow to get through.

I got a bunch of stuff for max. Onyx TreeStorm which is pretty good though memory intensive depending on the amount of polygons.
Has anybody seen Vray RT the new realtime renderer? Looks really good….

Rhino is the best. Easy modelling. Great plugins and render engines. Firms should be using it, it is cheap and powerful.
