Wyatt Thompson, PLA replied to the topic Parkmobiles/Parklet Design Help in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years ago
This sounds like a pretty great project. You’re probably familiar with PARKing Day: http://parkingday.org/ I don’t know if anyone has ever done a moving parklet for that event or not, but it’s a great idea. If you follow some of the links from the main site to the individual city sites you should be able to find a bunch of photos and i…[Read more]

Wow, that sounds like a killer gate. Unfortunately, I can’t help, but I do wish you luck, because if you can get it built, it will be amazing. Please post a pic when you find someone who is up to the challenge.

Wyatt Thompson, PLA replied to the topic Websites for Small Design Firms in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 4 months ago
Roothouse’s website does *look* really unique and their display of projects is impressive. Unfortunately from an SEO (search engine optimization) perspective I bet it suffers. Google and other search engines can’t index web pages that are solely image-based nearly as well as they can sites that are built on a CMS platform. Maybe Roothouse has…[Read more]

Overall, it’s a very nice presentation. I agree with many of the suggestions others have posted here. I noticed several typos/grammar errors in your captions that should definitely be fixed before sending this out to potential employers.

Totally agree. Great stuff at ARCHIvitamins and digitalcutouts. Christina, what album downloader did you use? I tried Pick&Zip, but it only grabbed what was on the first page. Others asked me to disable security settings, and that’s definitely not going to happen.

Do you have a decent sketchup library and a rendering program? Take your best trees and render them in plan view. Quick and easy.

Wyatt Thompson, PLA replied to the topic What's wrong with this picture? in the forum SUSTAINABILITY & DESIGN 12 years, 6 months ago
I have the Sustainable Sites Handbook at my desk right now. It says nothing about the Highline because it’s not a Sustainable Sites project. That’s the point. The book is not about “sustainability.” It’s about a very specific metric by which sites can be judged to be sustainable based on the SSI definitions. It’s possible that the Highline is very…[Read more]

Wyatt Thompson, PLA replied to the topic Sketchup acquired by Trimble in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 7 months ago
I think this will be a good thing. I wasn’t terribly excited when Google bought @Last, and that move, though not perfect, brought a lot of good things to SketchUp. Trimble has much stronger ties to the AE and design industry so I’m hopeful that there will be better integrated tools for terrain modeling and BIM. I am most excited that the SketchUp…[Read more]

Wyatt Thompson, PLA replied to the topic Documenting Work Experience: What are the Categories? in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 12 years, 7 months ago
I don’t disagree with that either. I was simply trying to understand why you, as an architect with an architectural education, would be so interested in “gaining Landscape Architecture Work Experience,” as if that would qualify you to be a PLA. It would be similar to me asking you how many seminars I should go to before I call myself an architect…[Read more]

I was really confused by what you wrote, Jason, and was just about to ask about it. Thanks for clarifying. My question to JA still is why you’re concerned about this at all? It seems to me that there are other credentials more closely related to building architecture that would give you more of an advantage in the marketplace than trying to find a…[Read more]

Wait, I’m really confused. You are an architect with a BS Arch(itecture) degree and you are concerned about gaining credentials so you can practice Landscape Architecture too? Without a BLA/MLA?

Wyatt Thompson, PLA replied to the topic Should I major in landscape architecture? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 7 months ago
The effects of the national economy on our profession is real. Its severity is regional. The Midwest, where I’m located, has weathered the storm much better than either coast. There certainly have been layoffs at some of the larger firms that employ landscape architects. At the same time, I am personally aware of a half dozen new LA companies that…[Read more]

Wasn’t sure if that was possible, and it probably isn’t, since there isn’t a cloud autocad.
Autodesk Cloud: https://documents.cloud.autodesk.com/Landing/Index I’ve not used it, but it might be worth checking out.

I don’t have any personal experience with this plant, but the Plant Conservation Alliance through the NPS has some good information on their site, as well as some people to contact for help. http://www.nps.gov/plants/alien/fact/rafi1.htm

Wyatt Thompson, PLA replied to the topic Planting in an Erosion Control Blanket in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 8 months ago
I must have missed the 2:1 part. Have you considered a short wall to take up some of that grade and flatten your slope? 2:1 is pretty severe. Are you planning to mulch under shrubs or all groundcover? Do you plan to irrigate? What about the poor maintenance person who has to get out there to trim/deadhead; or even the crew that gets to install? If…[Read more]

Check out the Tulips on Troost project in Kansas City, Missouri. Patrick Dougherty’s woven willow or Christo’s temporary installations may provide some inspiration too.
