- Paprocany Lake Shore Redevelopment: Shapedscape
Located in southwestern Poland, Tychy recently completed construction on a unique recreational waterfront park. Anchored by a wooden promenade nestled along the lake, the promenade links with pedestrian and bicycle paths and also features a beach and an outdoor gym. Additionally, a net stretched over the water creates an entertaining opportunity for children and adults to meander through or simply relax. “More than half of the world’s population lives in water-stressed areas and, according to the United Nations, that number will increase to two-thirds by 2025, said oceanographer Jerry Schubel, president of the Aquarium of the Pacific. As the world struggles with a shortage of fresh water, cities across the globe are seeking design solutions to conserve our most precious resource. From a water-generating billboard in Lima, Peru to Rubens living wall in London, and the Bullitt Center in Seattle—these are just a few designs that have been implemented worldwide. Lush greenery and water gardens are viewed differently from the distinctive residences seemingly situated atop the National Wetland Park of Xixi based in Hangzhou, China. Designed by David Chipperfield Architects, the concept marries a naturalistic setting with contemporary architectural details.
- Dream Park Competition for Australian Kids – To Be Designed by Landscape Architects: Architecture and Design
Established in mid-October, My Park Rules has been developed in conjunction with 202020 Vision and the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) to promote school organizations and community groups to enter their “under-performing” park for a make over. Open to school communities throughout Australia, the competition requests that participants “re-envision” their local park. Finalists will be announced on December 10, 2015 and the chosen submission will be re-designed by a landscape architect. - Five Minutes With…HASSELL Principal Jon Hazelwood: The Urban Developer
In a fascinating interview with Jon Hazelwood, a principal at the international design practice of HASSELL, he discusses a variety of topics ranging from what sparked his interest in landscape architecture to what he’s driven by and even the three best projects in the world at the moment. Jon’s has practiced landscape architecture for 18 years in both the UK and Australia and his approach to design is well said. “I think we often have a tendency to throw lots of “stuff” into a space, where simplicity is actually much harder and braver to design.” Recently, he was part of the team that collaborated with Archikidz to create PLAY(ground), which was an acclaimed pop-up play space in Sydney.
