off the rack HP desktop from Staples 2.5 years old cost about $700 at the time. I use it for my home office, but is no different than what I would have if I did not have an office in my home. Unless you are using some heavy graphics programs (gaming), the basic PCs are quite powerful for almost anything a normal person would use a home computer…[Read more]

Promo alert – but I went through the process from 2011 – 2013, taking the new Sections 3 & 4. After I failed and then passed Section 4, I created webinars to help others with Section 4, which is the toughest exam. These are now available through my website, http://www.cherylcorson.com. You can also see my article on Section 4 on Land 8…[Read more]

I really wasn’t asking what people are using in the office. No wonder you don’t like to play this game, you’re not very good at it. 🙂

What font are you using? If it is a fake hand lettering font, sometimes one line of the character is doubled, so there would be three. Try another font.

The problem for the few of us who want to use Revit and other BIM software, is that there aren’t a lot of other landscape architects out there using it yet. So, we have to figure out a lot of this stuff on our own. None of that makes it impossible to work with, though. I think it’s a matter of adapting it to your needs over time and knowing when…[Read more]

Sadly from my research there are several major stumbling blocks. The biggest being the exchange of information between software packages. The IFC format, which should (and will eventually) act as the bridge between software isn’t viable for Architects, let alone Landscape Architects. Secondly, the IFC format does not include any information…[Read more]

Depends what type of meetings as well. I’ve recently participated in a meeting where you are expected to stay up to the end, while our client reviews progress on all of their projects, even the ones you’re not working on.
About 30 people in the room, and when your turn has passed, you’re seriously bored and wasting time.
That’s when I did wish I…[Read more] -

My opinion is that in order to get into a position to further your landscape design career, you need to focus on filling existing needs of an existing landscape designer/architect or a firm. It took me a while to understand that there is a difference between looking at your career from the inside out and looking at it from the outside in.

Curious about your opinions Land8ers – when does it cross the line? Is it unprofessional to look up information pertinent to the meeting?
It seems to me that you could have a laptop or tablet in front of you and have all kinds of activity going on, but appear to be taking notes. Is it just the phone? If its ok to search for pertinent information…[Read more] -
