Jason T. Radice replied to the topic How To: Planting Plan Tricks? in the forum TECHNOLOGY 11 years, 4 months ago
Depending on the size of the plan, I have different techniques. Like others have stated, if the plan is at a small scale and so are the plants, use a hatch pattern to indicate plant typw. Include a detail of how you want them planted (staggard or lined up), and let the contractor figure it out based on area. For larger plants or at a much larger…[Read more]

While I agree a council record is very handy to have, it is just too expensive for the average LA to keep. When you add in the fees for the license, the application for the license, ASLA, etc. They charge BOTH to keep the record, AND to actually use it! In this day and age where mass data storage is cheap and simple, there is no good reason why it…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Where to move in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 11 years, 5 months ago
I agree to “move to where the food is” to borrow an old Sam Kinnison punchline.Unfortunately, many firms seem to be in a ‘local only’ hiring mode still. DC isn’t growing all that much job-wise, and is very instable still (I hear of occasional layoffs in the AEC inudstry to this day) and the market here is very, very saturated with many, many,…[Read more]

Around here it is pretty standard for d/b companies to put together some kind of display, even if it is just a small booth. Usually some pavers and a segmental retaining wall in place of a folding table and some shrubs and flowers artfully arranged. It doesn’t have to be fancy.

I’ve had a few 42″ 800ps working simultaneously an we worked them HARD. (affectionately referred to as “spock’s coffins) and more recently I used a Z6200 which has better photo quality. Both were pretty much bullet proof machines. Though with the 800’s, we often did direct prints rather than using the print server. For some reason, the onboard…[Read more]

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Software advise in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 11 years, 6 months ago
It depends on what level of detail you want to get into in addition to cost. Many residential places use software that is designed just for that type of work with lots of plant symbols already in there and 3D objects. Kind of like better versions of the landscape programs you can get at Best Buy…and even those may actually suit your needs for…[Read more]

Very restrained and subtle for a Van Valkenburg project. I like it. The building, however, looks like a 1980’s public school.

Jason T. Radice replied to the topic CAD Practice test for Potential Employees? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 11 years, 7 months ago
I recall having to do this for only one employer, my first out of college. The test was fairly simple, just sit down with a few premade blocks and try to design something out of them. That included having to explode and re-form the blocks, drawing lines and splines, as well as p-lines. One BIG clue to autocad competence is if the person is…[Read more]

Path is but a regulating line…one of many. It can create, be influenced by, or owns it entire existence to regulating lines, which are all derived from some sort of structure, man-made or natural. Keep in mind that regulating lines are not always created by built structure, but view axes, a line of hills or mountains, and even topographic l…[Read more]

Two words = Regulating Lines
These are imaginary lines drawn from other built structures (for me, buildings) that create axes from their physical arrangement, or geometries to play off of from architectural features that extend to the ground. As well, function segregation helps create order, which can be reinforced through various visual…[Read more] -
Jason T. Radice replied to the topic Wide format Printer recommendations? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 11 years, 9 months ago
It can make a huge difference. By inputting into InDesign by using a standard setting for the PDF, color is assigned to the black lines, and unless you make the drawing pure black, it can use all four toner colors to print black which is why the image will print muddy and brown. And if the printer’s registration is off, it looks terrible. Un…[Read more] -

If you are not going to use it all that much, time is not of the essence, and you are using it for personal reasons instead of recouping by billing the costs on a job, I would suggest just getting what you need laser printed at a good print shop. It will cost you a lot less in the end and be much less of a headache. I have an Epson inkjet that I…[Read more]

Agreed, messing with the slab when you don’t have to is the better way. You will need some sort of spacer which could be a could be a solid concrete block in the same dimension of the paver, and you simply glue a paver on top using masonry adhesive so it matches. Then glue the spacer block onto the slab using the same masonry adhesive (go for one…[Read more]

I would highly suggest you contact a local LA and Arch office and tell them you are a student exploring career options and ask them if you could visit their office during lunch or after hours (not to eat in to billable time) to discuss the profession. Some areas have an organized ‘job shadow’ usualy arranged by the local ASLA or AIA chapter. You…[Read more]
