So, in the meantime, what’s the answer?
Edit: for brevity…I’m tightening my belt.

On that note, most people aren’t going to notice a difference between a 150 and 300 dpi image, let alone 600. I don’t think I would.

Is the attached image another cad drawing youre tracing over? It’s difficult to see what you’re talking about in that attachment. Why not just insert a jpeg? Can you get a hold of the original cad drawing and insert as xref? If yo dont necessarily need a bmp, try a jpeg and check the resolution and size before inserting. You shouldn’t need…[Read more]

I feel like I’ve seen a lot more conservativism in architects than LA’s. Doesn’t stop me from wanting to learn how to design buildings, lol. Perhaps it’s the hubris you’re sensing, getting mistaken for unbridled creativity.
The BSLA program I was in actually didn’t focus as much on horticulture as much as I expected. Though we did recieve healthy…[Read more]

The last small office I worked at hired a dedicated business development person. We also took on some smallish residential projects to offset overhead. I’m now trying to do my own consulting work as a design and graphics production resource with the capability of working remotely as a subcontractor, potentially reducing overhead for established…[Read more]

Not very well in my experience. I prefer to use a mouse with sketchup and autocad. A former coworker used a trackball for everything. The other advantage of using a trackball is that no one will use your machine when youre out of office.
I’d suggest using a tablet for just about anything else though, so long as you can move your shoulder, elbow…[Read more]

I gotta disagree that a lot of us are “design-build.” I think most students, whether bsla, bla, or mla tend toward dream design and have no sense of how things go together. I’m also not sure why so many practitioners and academics balk at the idea of design-build as a legitimate and worthy sphere of practice. In my opinion, we could use a lot more…[Read more]

If you have tendonitis in your elbow/shoulder or even wrist I think a tablet would only exacerbate the problem. Can you draw without pain? I’d say you’d be better off with a trackball mouse which require very little movement at all. Also, a tablet with software like autocad isn’t very practical.
I’ve been using a tablet and mouse for about four…[Read more]

In Colorado. I believe it is 10+ years experience to sit for the LARE with no la degree. I think you still need to have experience in that time working under a licensed LA.
I didn’t know there was that great of a difference between a BLA and BSLA. Fwiw, I have a BSLA and I learned to make websites (albeit stuck in the 90’s lol). If I wanted to…[Read more]

I’ve shared my story here a few times and it’s probably getting a little old, but anyway…I was a landscape designer/contractor prior to returning to school for my BSLA in 2004. Andrew G knows probably all too well about the conflict I was facing similar to yours back then when contemplating leaving relatively successful positions as a landscape…[Read more]

take a look at some of the projects on DPZ’s site (Duany Plater Zyrbek). Sorry, cant remember the address off hand, just google it. They have lots of small town centers and infills there with good data on the projects. You could also look at some of the graphics from my capstone project on my folio. I did a mixed use town center for a rural…[Read more]

I’m loving the inventiveness the ‘landscape urbanism’ movement is bringing to the english language.
I would also add:
water feature= fountain (depending on who you ask of course. Andrew might say ‘retention pond’ lol)
juxtaposition= what I did has nothing to do with the stuff around it. -

You’re kind of coming out of left field here. Nice link on the previous, somewhat less cryptic reply regarding salary data. I especially enjoyed the salary list site which appeared to have some relatively accurate salary information despite going completely ignored, lol.

I’ve worked for big firms as well. I was lucky to be involved in all aspects of a wide range of projects over the course of four years from urban planning and design, trails, environmental graphics, parks, and site planning to the smallest backyard gardens.
The point I was trying to make is that sometimes we lose sight of our initial goals and…[Read more]
