Rhino, Sketch up , 3ds max, etc are modeling programs. VRay, Kerkythea, Mental Ray are rendering plug ins for modeling programs. Personally I find Mental Ray to be the best for 3ds/Maya. But VRay is made for a lot of programs.
As far as Rhino and Autocad. For me, yes, Rhino is much better. the 3d and 2d are integrated. There is a strong user…[Read more]

If you are going to use sketch up you have to get a render engine, as previously stated. Vray is the best, while not free like Kerkythea, it is faster, has more materials and the end product is superior.
But, if you want to do it efficiently just get Rhino and do your 2D and 3D in one software package. It is a better product than Autocad, cheaper…[Read more]

Basically it is intensive urban farming in Cuba. If I recall correctly they are getting yields of 12kg of food a year from a square meter.
Urban allotments basically. I spelled it wrong – organoponicos.http://havanajournal.com/business/entry/organoponicos-and-organic-produce-in-cuba/

Halprin. But the most interesting part of the plaza (to me) is that it is the birthplace of modern skateboard. Though they called
it EMB. From about 1990 until about 1994 it was where anything innovative in skating took place. Basically a mecca where every
skater dreamed of going. It had badass locals though who hated T-dogs. Anyways, it is…[Read more] -

I find that the reason landscape architects don’t use 3d design software for anything but visualisation is because of preconceptions, often the ones that are stated in the previous response.
Architects have taken 3d software far beyond just flat components. And computers can figure out immensely complicated curves using NURBS and t-splines. The…[Read more]

Look up Anti-Memorials and Sue Anne Ware. Her design for a project for people who died from heroin overdoses is good.

The DW Asheville office is nice. The town is pretty progressive for the south and the mountains are right there, but not much skiing and the peaks are tree-covered to the tops. The rivers and gorges are beautiful, though I think the weather ranges from warm to hot with… -

RF,
I understand what you’re point is and respect it. Still, just because everyone else is doing something one way doesn’t mean that is the correct way, or that there even is one. I know thisisn’t necessarily what you’re getting at, but I think it’s close. I have a quote by Paul Rand, a notable graphic artist who did the still… -

I know what Brandon is saying. What would you suggest? I use some 3D, but keep it fairly limited. I have a feeling you’re going to start talking about Frank Gehry any minute 😉
My thought is that if you can’t sketch it, model it, or at least dream it without the aid of a computer you certainly shouldn’t bother taking the time to…

Ryland Fox replied to the topic Obstacles Facing Our Profession? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 16 years, 4 months ago
This is maybe just a personal one but I think that one of the problems we have as a profession currently is the lack of any really “new” design. I never really see anything that has, as Jencks (I think?) put it: “the shock of the new”. Other design professions seem to test boundaries a lot more, try new things. Look at Beijing, we are constantly…[Read more]

I try to learn everything. My preference is Rhino because it is the most fun. That said, firms I worked at used Autocad or Microstation.
