Wes Arola, RLA replied to the topic Questions to ask when Interviewing for an Entry-Level Position in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 11 months ago
What is the structure of the office as far as how work is dispersed at different levels. Will you get to see any design work, or will you be a CAD robot who drafts other people’s design work. What is the promise for progression with the company as far as reviews and promotions. Will they pay for licensure, LEED, professional development…[Read more]

also keep in mine if you plan to get a sheet of water to flow across or fall from a surface the surface must be perfectly level. keep in mine the materials and constructibility.

Wes Arola, RLA replied to the topic Designing a water runnel feature in the forum DETAILS & MATERIALS 14 years ago
What is the difference in grade from the top of the runnel to the bottom? I will ask that question for all, and offer the suggestion that the larger grade difference the higher the ability to generate audible turbulence via gravity. Materials will play a large roll in noises and the restriction of water and letting it “build up” and have the…[Read more]

Wes Arola, RLA replied to the topic Modeling Plants in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 1 month ago
Its too bad you cant save your money and time and use Sketchup. You will 99% never have to build a model in an office. Good luck~!
A cool thing you could do is find a place that does CNC work and have them cut your boards (based on cad drawings) for contours or buildings.

write up contracts or agreements even if its a $600 job. Many people have learned that lesson for us and its not worth it. Best of luck at getting your name out there. Another thing to do is develop a plant list and a set of CAD standards and blocks that you will plan to use and a nice title block.

Wes Arola, RLA replied to the topic Curb Cuts to Bioretention in the forum SUSTAINABILITY & DESIGN 14 years, 6 months ago
You could go completely curbless and sheet flow into planting which will reduce the concern for erosion through certain strategically placed “inlets” unless you are trying to hold grade in some areas…Another interesting thing to think about it a plant list or materials as far as a detail for infiltration and treating the run off. Good luck!…[Read more]

Wes Arola, RLA replied to the topic Creating prairie in photoshop in the forum TECHNOLOGY 14 years, 6 months ago
The key is to find or create the correct brush and vary the size of it using the brackets [ ] to make it larger or smaller as you sample for a photo of an actual prairie. That way you will sample the real colors and textures from the picture. Good luck! Post it up when you’re done!

Take a look into Portland, Oregon. I ran into a small town in Washington – Washougal which had just rennovated it small downtown main street for farmers markets and plaza space. All parallel parking areas were pervious pavers with slots in the curbs for water to drain into planted swale areas. Very functional example. I can send you some pictures…[Read more]
