great points made about creativity and productivity in the long run…
anytime you suck some control away from a creative person, they put less creative force into the rest of their work. -
Wes Arola, RLA replied to the topic ASLA should promote Landscape Architecture on HGTV in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 9 months ago
The common day person will actually develop and understanding and see the difference between what a landscaper, landscape designer and landscape architect are. A fast paced design competition with international teams would be an interesting show! Add some liquor, drama , and foul language and we might be on to something for MTV!

You can add a lot of effects by simply using drop shadows and bevel and emboss , as well as making copies of layers and applying textures to them. Another very useful tip is copying and pasting layer properties.

For very illustrative, final plans use photoshop. For a design that is going to possibly change you can use photoshop but try to keep things simple, otherwise if the plan changes you just wasted a ton of time.
I personally like to use the combination of cad and photoshop. From cad I plot pdfs of certain elements, such as hardscape, trees, bldgs,…[Read more]

Wes Arola, RLA replied to the topic [Over]parking in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 10 months ago
I notice this the most when looking at stadiums or performance venues from an aerial. Ridiculous amounts of parking, for what reason….
Convenience.
If alternative transportation to these events were more convenient than driving, paying for a parking space, and waiting an hour in line to park and an hour in line to leave we may see a change.

Wes Arola, RLA replied to the topic The new Landscape Architect? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 10 months ago
There will not be a lot of “new work” or development, but those existing projects that have been neglected as far as maintenance and attention may need some renovations and modernization in order to serve the higher level of use due to the rise of the economy and also the expectations as far as energy efficiency and waste water issues.

I graduated from one of the best schools on the west coast and landed an entry level job in an extremely impacted job market in 2009. I am starting to think about future goals such as licensure, entering design competitions, and obtaining accreditations.

If you dont know Sketchup, it is a very easy program to learn and use, and will give you a base to work from. You can take sketchup models into Rhino and 3ds to detail them even more and produce high quality renders and animations. I think it is best to learn sketchup first. It is a great design tool and you can use it for presentation graphics by…[Read more]

Wes Arola, RLA replied to the topic Sustainable Landscapes Rating System for Sustainable Sites Initiative in the forum SUSTAINABILITY & DESIGN 15 years ago
I feel all these criteria should be applied to any design no matter the intention ( to win a merit or not) It should be our responsibility as designers to address these factors anyways. This system will become a great reminder and a way to assign measurable importance to all factors of projects.

Artlantis has a lot of capability and also is quite easy to use. There is a free trial and the pro version is comparably cheap.
