Across the world people are living longer which leads to an aging population. The Australian Institute of Landscape Architecture (AILA) has a plan to tackle some of the health implications of the aging population, through exercise parks aimed specifically at the elderly. Research conducted by the University of Victoria and Lappset Australia (the manufacturers of play and exercise equipment) aims to investigate the relationship between exercise and both physical and mental health in seniors, through the use of a specially designed park in Sunshine North, West Melbourne. President of AILA, Mark Frisby identified the importance of landscape architects in driving change for a healthier aging population. He indicated that landscape architects have a capacity to create a better future for society, and that it’s important to combine the strengths of the profession with allied organizations such as Lappset Australia and Victoria University at the outset.
