wow, really frustrated with lost reponses here…smart response gone forever.
anyway, I was reminded of my trip on the appalachian trail last summer. I walked about 40 milesover about a week across new hampshires white mountains. The interesting thing about the AT is the campsites. I slept in the backcountry most nights, but I also stayed at…[Read more]

Honestly, I think the best solution is public space..I mean ‘good’ public space with, like, trees and stuff. But really, just providing space I would think could be enough if it provides some shelter and habitat for everyone which is what parks used to do I think.

Why not just hand out nylon tents if we’re going to build wooden sheds? Sounds like we’re re-inventing the wheel errmm..tent here.

Nice.
The overall layout is very nice, though it might overwhelm some of the landscape work a bit. There are a lot of font sizes, but I think it all works pretty well.
I’d like to see a little more ‘build-up’ of your hand sketches/process drawings–if nothing more than to illustrate your personality and how you might think. Although I like the…[Read more]

I did this a few years ago for a student park project. Everything except for the sky is done from scratch with photoshop brushes I made or borrowed from the default library. There are also a few filters here and there. I can answer specific questions if you have any. That might be more helpful.

Well,
The easiest way might be to find or take a picture of a prairie you like and create a photoshop montage with it.
The way I have used more in the past is to create custom brushes in photoshop. There are videos online about creating custom brushes. If you create a grass brush, which there may already be one by defauly in your brushes palette…[Read more]

‘cynicism, expressed in constructive and goal oriented fashion..’
You mean ‘ambition’ then? If so, I would agree, not more cynicism. What do they say about talent? ‘Liquified trouble.’

There are a lot of professional portfolios on the ASLA resume posting page right now.
From my own observation they always seem to be pretty ‘gridded’ and straight forward–three or four drawings on 8.5×11 with a simple titleblock and project stats on each sheet. I’m curious what others suggest as well. Just my two cents.
If I were to re-do my…[Read more]

I thought by 4D, they meant ‘time,’ ie animation.
But maybe they just meant modeling. I’m not hip.
If it’s true that we should be using BIM software in conceptual landscape design, how much ‘time’ would we be devoting to modeling versus critical thinking? I think it would be great otherwise to have a software application that actually works…[Read more]

So it would be Ok for the chair of Harvard GSD to enter an academic project? Maybe this has already been done?
I know that the awards jury reviews projects anonymously, but I would think it would seem pretty obvious to me if I were on the jury the geographic location of these projects. Are these really The Best or is there some agenda or…[Read more]

nca replied to the topic Do you design development of land? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 6 months ago
Yes.
I design conventional subdivision master plans (just completing my first quarter section master plan), commercial site plans, eductional site design, parks, and signage.
I would consider all of that development driven.
In my limited experience as a designer I can honestly say that there seems to be no magic to conventional land…[Read more]

I just noticed that all three projects recognize a partnership between Turenscape and Peking University. What’s up with that?I thought professional awards were for professional projects? So can MVVA partner with GSD and win an award next year?
Otherwise, I think the projects are good. They offer a bit of change from the usual, though I think ASLA…[Read more]

Thanks Trace. I vaguely recall Corners book and the photos.
We have a lot of great examples of center-pivots and other interesting ag patterns here in colorado, but typically those patterns disappear when suburbs sprout up.
I did find a website dedicated to ‘agriburbia’ of which I learned the founders of the movement are right here in Boulder,…[Read more]

You dont need to at all.
I spent $100 on my latest tablet which is over four years old now and still working just fine. Prior to that I had a 3×5 hand-me-down wacom graphire that worked fine for a year until I upgraded. I sort of live by the mantra that having all the best tools doesnt make up for a lot of practice.

To be honest I feel like your friends may have been in the wrong profession to begin with to go from LA to pharmacy..wow. I wonder what percentage of the current LA’s would make a switch like this? Could be good for those that stay.
