Ryland Fox replied to the topic Are (or were) 3ds Max and Rhino a part of your LA curriculum? in the forum TECHNOLOGY 14 years, 2 months ago
You can’t really lump Rhino in with 3ds. It is a drafting program. Anyone using autocad can pick it up pretty quickly. Plus it isn’t expensive.
As far as learning 3ds, if you are a student Autodesk has learning editions of all their software available on their site for free, many tutorials and curriculum, also there are many tutorials on the…[Read more]

Ryland Fox replied to the topic what the mainly software used to make 3d? in the forum TECHNOLOGY 14 years, 5 months ago
Unfortunately I have not projects in BIM. Currently in my working life parametrics/BIM remain an outside interest that I do when I can. That said, I do have an upcoming outside project coming up that I am going to try to use Revit or DP for. Though I foresee frustration levels rising. I could see a decent use for DP being in the conceptual stages…[Read more]

Ah well I guess that is still well less than Catia costs.
DP was definitely never easy to learn and even harder to teach but once into it the power of the program was kind of captivating. It was worth learning because it gave me a good basis in parametrics/parametric thinking and has made subsequent programs a lot easier to get the hang of.

Agreed on revit and archicad. And on that front Digital Projects, though the expense can be high. After many, many hours invested in DP I despair to find a firm using it. Maybe at some point in the future.
Pretty much all my modeling is done in Rhino and translated to Max or Maya. I never really liked modeling in Max but it is getting more…[Read more]

Well, Skillwise i think that is where the mentorship comes in which takes another year. I am not to sure of any books that would covers admin, fee proposal etc. but there are many people practicing here who aren’t registered so it isn’t a huge deal anyway. though recommended.

Download the guide to registration, it should help you out with registration stuff
http://www.aila.org.au/membership/reg-info.htmIt looks like you have the minimum work experience though just the bare minimum. you would need to go through mentorship though

Also print it as a postscript file and then use distiller to experiment on pdf sizes and quality.

300dpi is huge. screen dpi is 72 and you can get good print quality at not much higher.

I like the Luxigon style where pretty much everything but the basic render is done in photoshop. but if you can get onyx Treestorm which comes with a grass generator and and a lot of trees that can be changed and there is a free ivy generator that I posted somewhere on here but I can’t remember the name.
Most people just seem to get the…[Read more]

Rhino. Maya is a great program but the learning curve is fairly steep.

I believe it is a Nvidia 280 GTM, middle of the range but still better than the one on my old computer that ran max 2010 quite well. i7, 8 gigs of ram. Having some photoshop problems too. pretty much everything is frames per second related, it makes zooming and moving things around so hard.

So what are people’s experiences with windows 7 and max? I am running 7 professional 64bit and max 2010 64 bit and having some problems, mainly graphics card related. very low fps which is making it hard to model. though I am hoping that max 2011 which comes out in the next month will help.

Ryland Fox replied to the topic LA in Australia in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 8 months ago
Depends on the city. Sydney is slower than say Melbourne, which seems to be going okay. there is a lot of Vectorworks and microstation usage here. Go to the AILA page (http://www.aila.org.au) look at the firm list of where you are going and contact some firms that you are interested in now. You never know what will happen, i too was here for 2 years and…[Read more]
