If the video stuff looks similar to old stuff, then the older vignettes are probably a good base line to use. Not having to draw it should allow you to concentrate on the information at hand and not make irrelevant mistakes (which I think is one of the intents of the new format). Anything in the “manual” sections are game (it’s their version o…[Read more]

Paley Park / Greenacre Park, Gantry Plaza Park, The Hudson River Park and the piers. I’ll second the Irish Hunger Memorial. New FDR memorial might be worth looking at.
Food – Joe’s Shanghai & Pho Bang are 2 of my regular spots in Chinatown; Yelp reviews are very helpful in the city.

I graduated in ’09. Took some down time, took a few months to get an entry level job (with 5 yrs of experience in site engineering), got laid off for a year. I’ve been working now at another firm for just over a year. Most of my peers are in landscape architecture- we got out as firms on the coasts needed to hire entry level for work that is trickling in.

I will be – there’s an installation of it at the children’s garden at NYBG, it seems to be holding up well.

Tosh K replied to the topic Dear ASLA: You're completely AWOL on this one- What an incredible missed opportunity… Our dues are due this in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 2 months ago
Meh, at least NPR is covering increasingly LA related segments; the AIA has the money (much larger membership), let them spend it and let LAs get the word out locally to say “hey, we do that very well, how can I help?” Awareness and interest in project types in our field is good no matter who pays for it.
My question would be was there any…[Read more]

Tosh K replied to the topic Quick way to convey intimate knowlege of plant material? in the forum PORTFOLIO & RESUME 12 years, 2 months ago
If you have horticultural or arborist certification, there’s that; or worked in a nursery… Some people fresh out of school list “related coursework” to convey some indication of the slant of their curriculum, or to highlight areas of personal interest. Maybe teaching/TA work related to coursework as bullets?

Tosh K replied to the topic Nerds in the landscape (How does lar respond to a tech culture?) in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 3 months ago
Some cities do this with trees ( for maintenance, but also leads you to who/when it was planted and the ability to report damage), bldgs, pretty much anything a whole lot of ugly-in-my-opinion barcoding; smaller than billboards, but still disappointing.
Why discourage awareness with so much instant access? I’m going to side with Louv on this one.

These always remind of the West Wing episode with the wolf highway lobbyist… I know they work for some species, but as mark pointed out can lead to kill zones (which I suppose means the prey are using them…). One would think that the traffic safety factor for larger critters makes it more economically prudent to fund them. Here’s to ho…[Read more]

Tosh K replied to the topic MLA program with emphasis on higher education career? in the forum EDUCATION 12 years, 3 months ago
I think Matt covered it well: GSD, Penn, UVA, and UC-Berkeley are the established older programs and maintain a level of academic standard that is a ground work or for pursuing personal research. UT-Austin, UofMN, UGA, UW and LSU all also have very respected programs that integrate research into their curricula. A number of new programs have b…[Read more]

Tosh K replied to the topic Which countries are hiring? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 4 months ago
There has been more work in the Middle East and China (both economies are slowing down); Brazil should be picking up – large architecture firms have already established presences there. That being said, unless you have language skills that can make you able to fit right in, you might be best served knocking on doors of firms that do work abroad…[Read more]

Tosh K replied to the topic Too much text? in the forum PORTFOLIO & RESUME 12 years, 4 months ago
I like that you start with one of your strongest projects, the last one should be your strongest (it looks like it will have more content?). I agree with the previous posters – the grey is distracting. Amount of text doesn’t bother me – but it should add relevant content not repeat the obvious (didn’t get a chance to go through it).
The use of w…[Read more] -
Tosh K replied to the topic Any/what organizations offer grants to LA students/departments? in the forum EDUCATION 12 years, 4 months ago
Alumni and your university are your best bets – professionals have a hard enough time, but the well-networked student might get a dedicated alum or two to chip in; or just get a student ASLA award.

Nice work – east coast firms have all been actively looking though a lot of us are skittish about adding staff but many already have; hope you’ve been hammering on the UGA network, there’s a lot of em out here.
Good luck. -

A lot of contractors that work on municipal projects will keep salvaged material in their materials yard, might ask a few of them.

Thanks for sharing – not an entirely new narrative among historians, but seems like a nice intro into the jarring WWs impact in design for the designer community.

resume seems “light” considering the text in the cover letter…
I’ve seen folks list representative project/client&team/cost with responsibilities under employment, particularly for PM positions:
ABC Park
client: City of ABC
project budget: $1,500,000 (some indication of size)
-schematic design through construction administration as project…[Read more] -

If the senior folks in a fimr list “avid snowboarder” in their profiles/the office is in snow-sport country/firm’s work often involves winter sports, it could help… I once had an extended conversation about time spent in Germany because my interviewer had extended relatives there (it showed up in my photography and in my resume) – I was the…[Read more]
