not to quibble, MP, but I will quibble..Is the Salk really worth a visit? What does one get out of a visit, as opposed to reading about and looking at pictures of this space? IMHO, not much..The runnal, the central runnal, by the way, is the best place to run communicatons cables, when hosting an outdoor event there..says something about form and…[Read more]

can a landscape love you back?
hee..j/k
thanks for drawings – one thing I like about them is the traditionally rendered prisma plan/section/hand drawn perspective presentations.
Perhaps it is a computer program that emulates the hand-rendered style, but it convinces me.. -

the Getty – landscape design (NOT by an LA of course..) is pretty interesting..after that, Big Sur cliff walk – otters! SF you can do a really fun ‘staircase gardens ‘ tour – you can look it up on-line..
personally not enthusiastic about Ca design, plant palette, etc..Be prepared to drive at 80mph everywhere being tailgated by a line of twenty…[Read more] -

I agree, Maui, have not heard good things about James Burnett, and he is always advertising for help….was surprised to see someone mention him in this stream…..
I think Edwina Von Gal is a lot of fun, and Guftafson, whtever, with the Millenial park in Chicago, I like their stuff.. -

wow, good comments! Jason, why would one not want to go to Winterthur? It totally has the horticulturally oriented Longwood onthe ropes as far as a day in great landscape design..Not to speak of the Kennet Square/ Wyeth landscapes plus zoning ordinance based on paintings congflagrations – I mean contagions..I mean conhabitations/
and BARTRAMS…[Read more] -

Wintherthur has longwood beat, IMHO, altho Longwood is pretty spectacular..Robert Venturis Franklin Park is pretty weird and an interesting visit, for design wonks, and the Wissahickon! Love it.. Oh – Winterthur might be in Delaware? sorry! Still way worth the sie trip..

the other thing that occurs to me about this is, is this a Tsunami prone part of the world? Or is it protected..Never been to Seattle.
but with the Japanese Tsunami, the didn’t observe the McHarg Layer cake rules, and failed to recognize quake-prone areas as having knock-out constraints for building nuclear reactors..
You can’t do anything…[Read more] -

I still love the San chapelle, in Paris, the apex of stained glass and flying butresses, the Tuileries and the rodin museum…
and as far as I am concerned, breakfast cafe latte in paris, but bring your own food to London, but go see plays, go see the Royal Shakespeare for every play on the rep that you can…

thanks for posting, Heather, interesting event..
To me this design fails to deal with #1 problem – the highway. Same problem in Philly – have to underground highway, to make space truely usable..
Yes, that is expensive, but tourism brings money and good parks raise property values..Besides, how about just doingit because it is the right thing to…[Read more] -

who you talking to, Thomas – who used ‘urbanity’, I don’t see it..That would be great if you are picking that out of Wytolds article – that would be a stupid mistake on his part, altho I have to admit, as long as I live I will not know how to spell mistake, potato or olmsted..

Are these guys out on Long Island, a place that designs and builds wooden play structures? That was a really fast paced job, I interviewed for years ago – the designer needed to be a real director, it was a very intense position – felt I didn’t get it because they needed someone who would be at the center of a very dynamic process, so maybe th…[Read more]

You do have a point Jason..I was shocked to find the Fresno has a plan for an aquarium, that thankfully has yet to get built – not even an aquarium of native species, a full-fledged aquarium, here in the central valley..seems stupid to m e..On the other hand, Charlottesvilles Main Street that was closed to cars in the seventies is extremely…[Read more]

Interesting points, Thomas..Forgot they know each other pretty well..
I agree about Wytold, though..His opinions seem so ridiculous, and completely indefensible, often – and ihis little essays, with their far-fetched analyzing, have absolutely no consequences.. Will this article influence anyone anywhere who has an opportunity to do an e…[Read more] -

Paley depends on being enclosed, of course, but it does not depend on the architecture of the enclosure, so I beg to differ, Jason..Those walls are just walls.
But Paley is probably not the best example, since it is so urban – is is just one of my favorites for great design..
My point remains, I think the that one gets the distinct feeling from…[Read more] -

I don’t know, Ida, I get a pretty negative feel from the article – ‘relentlessly hip’ is not exactly a postive thing to say, and he seems to me to be saying overall the design depends on the interesting architecture right next to the High Line..Fairly insulting, I think. I don’t believe anyone would say the design of Prospect Park in Brooklyn…[Read more]

I haven’t been to either
