Leslie B Wagle replied to the topic More fodder for the 'landscape architecture identitiy crisis' conversation in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 2 months ago
It was good (although I don’t think many of us work across all the variety of challenges he mentioned; the whole body of us may do that)….however, there is a risk to encouraging people to think “if it’s outside, it was designed by a landscape architect.” We think we’re under-recognized, which is true, but I’ve seen rants and raves about awful…[Read more]

Believe me, in similar contexts I also “feel the pain,” but we need to strategize what to do about it. Sometimes it’s all set, but other time the news can be an opening to hop in there somewhere. I would cite a case but don’t want to broadcast it, where I saw a story about something intriguing earlier this year and at first I had the same “darn I…[Read more]

Re-reading my post this morning (written too late at night), I see I didn’t make a good connection to the frustration with ASLA. That pdf doesn’t mention consultants, but I think I read somewhere that somebody “big” in the profession was chosen as a consultant on the Poplar Point part of it.
In other words, there has been LA involvement already…[Read more]

I don’t know anything about the pocket parks cited (although there are initiatives like Bette Midler’s organization in New York City and as I posted in another thread, they are advertising to fill positions and mention LA as a desired form of training).
HOWEVER, that bridge story reminds me of having read about the area one time and I just…[Read more]

There was a lot to digest there, and yes he could have shared more how he managed the intermediate steps to self employment. But then he was talking about a widespread condition and did make the point that “My practice fills a tiny niche and I recognize that it is not financially viable for the profession as a whole,” which I think is a key to u…[Read more]

I actually think the focus now may be a COUNTER movement to the social media and internet based private living patterns (although business operations are another matter). Sure, if a park is going to have WiFi, it might be nice to include tables as well as park benches for laptop use etc. but the “Healthy Cities” movement is alive and growing, and…[Read more]

This may not be a good barometer of anything, but just out of curiosity, I have had brief looks at elance.com and found site design projects within the help needed ads. They are varied, some just a one-time home plan, some as big as large apartment projects. And now and then you see one that wants a continuing relationship with a designer for a…[Read more]

I agree; it’s kind of chicken-and-egg. There have always been “living in the interior only” people (the majority) and I don’t see a lot of changes in that other than perhaps more kids needing a cure for “last child in the woods” syndrome (decreasing outdoor play). But to catch a trend means to keep your ear to the ground on where society is going…[Read more]

It’s not dead in the design-build area where I see smatterings of ads on sites like simplyhired, indeed, monster etc., although they make it clear that the work involves selling, estimating, and crew supervision…and a person might have to move to them. There may also be stacks of candidates to compete with, but there are definitely ads. It’s…[Read more]

I don’t think you’re “harping,” actually I think when we have the means of communicating about whatever we can use to gain perspective, it can help counteract any sense of isolation or the “what’s wrong with my own scene” mental state that can take hold. Of course there are general news sources with sobering information, but they focus more on…[Read more]

Leslie B Wagle replied to the topic What does the future hold for therapeutic landscapes?? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 5 months ago
In just my quick response, there doesn’t seem to be any hard lines around this concept; or maybe people are just creative in their use of “therapeutic garden” as a term. It seems to encompass anything from just more smells and colors included for the elderly to enjoy, all the way to seriously designed areas for a special target group, with details…[Read more]

Coco, I have to admit I’m not sure what you mean by Landscape Architecture being “more like reversi (the game). If something goes wrong in such a small space, that can change a whole thing. I am looking at more of positive side so it means that one little thing can change a whole thing as a system.”
I don’t know reversi but I think you might be…[Read more]

I’ve had a design posted on one by a client, but I don’t try to push that myself; I think there is some benefit of course in having a website/portfolio to refer people to, or a blog if you think you have enough ideas to keep it updated. But social media, not so sure. That would imply that clients want to know about each other, and why would they?…[Read more]

This isn’t quite on that track but could tie in on the “ideal person wanted” theme. It seems that education and employment in general are becoming unhinged.
Majority of unemployed now have some college education:
