I’d go with reflectorless TS if you have access to it. Depending on how much precision and accuracy you need, you might be able to get by with a good handheld GPS.

I was at the same workshop and I agree with Max. It was an outstanding experience.
It is pricey, though. Tuition is $1400-1800, flight, hotel for the week, plan on about $300 for materials and another $50-100 for books, and $55 for “stuff”.
You could cut back by not buying all the materials. I would skip the watercolor portion of the clas…[Read more] -

Go north, young man. There’s work available and if things get really, really bad, there’s lots of large ungulates to eat should we dip below Stage 3 Societal Collapse.
It’s why I’m here. -

I would also recommend investing in hand tools. If you don’t need them yourself, they will retain high value when you barter.
What stage of societal collapse do you think we will hit? Where do you think we are now?
Stages of Collapse Stage 1: Financial collapse. Faith in “business as usual” is lost. The future is no longer assumed res…

Chupacabra replied to the topic What can be done to improve the ASLA… in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 5 months ago
I’m somewhat involved with my state chapter and they have done quite a bit of good. They got Alaska the stamp, work hard to market the profession, and collaborate well to promote our shared interests.
I would just as soon dump the national ASLA, though. LAM is alright, but it isn’t worth hundreds of dollars per year. My state dues are 1/10…[Read more] -

Actually, Al Gore didn’t show up. They interviewed Lawrence Halprin instead, so it wasn’t so bad.

Chupacabra replied to the topic If you are not a registered LA, why haven't you gotten the stamp? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 6 months ago
I grew up in AK so it’s no big deal for me. There’s a lot more opportunity up here for the short and medium term (no recession, $100 barrels of oil), which is why I turned down a job in Kona just this week. I miss Hawaii and will get back there someday.
What made you decide to get registered after 8 years? The reason why I’m pursuing it is…[Read more] -
Chupacabra replied to the topic GIS in landscape architecture in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 6 months ago
I do regional level landscape planning and analysis and I find a medium level of GIS expertise to be extremely useful, even when I work at smaller scales (for me 1000 acres is small). We have an entire GIS department that can tackle the high-end stuff and data management so I could get by ok without being adept with ArcGIS but it is usually…[Read more]

I’ve read DNA testing of the sort used to identify people (as opposed to identifying specific genetic issues) takes two hours, if you really want it done quickly.
I used DNA testing on a fisheries management project, and if the state of Alaska can turn around 10,000 sockeye salmon samples in four days to let us know which rivers the pulse is…[Read more] -

It’s an interesting topic. I think the closest to a villian’s memorial I can think of is when they parade around the corpse/body parts, and I guess in a way that’s more of a temporary installation than an actual design.
I remember reading that after WWII there was talk about not rebuilding dresden, and to leave it as a mass of wreckage and r…[Read more] -

If the SEALs originated on a ship in the Indian Ocean then a burial at sea wouldn’t be too surprising. That would be the standard procedure if they weren’t planning to save his body for something else (which is certainly possible). Burial at sea includes measures to ensure you won’t come floating back up.

Chupacabra replied to the topic Non-RLA's using the title Landscape Architect in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 7 months ago
My state chapter’s website includes an overview of the process they went through to get licensing here and the primary driver was protecting our turf from other professions. I personally am glad they did it and think overall it’s beneficial for the profession.
I agree that the LARE has some failings as a metric but since it is only one of the…[Read more] -

It’s interesting that Fredrick Law Olmsted is usually referred to as a landscape architect, even though he clearly wasn’t.

“Then…RLAs let’s commit to fighting for our equal place with architects and engineers and apparently the Federal Gov.”
I’m pretty sure the feds had a job classification titled “Landscape Architect” decades before licensure for landscape architects existed. Maybe they are grandfathered in? -
Chupacabra replied to the topic Non-RLA's using the title Landscape Architect in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 7 months ago
I think the RLAs have a fair point about guarding their title (backed by law, too). “Landscape Architect” has a very specific definition in most states, one that is regulated. The same simply can’t be said for landscapers (or planners). The key, I believe, is that people with Teh Stamp have documented their profession training and experience u…[Read more]

The LARE battery does not challenge the planning spectrum of landscape architecture nearly as rigorously as it should. Why does an entire branch of what LAs do get virtually passed over?

I sometimes get annoyed with flash intros and yours was moving slow. I did like the images you showed, though, especially the lines to birch trees sequence.
I like the general layout and the way you’ve branded yourself.
I would drop all the non-LA education stuff on your resume.
Edit: I went back and it was moving much faster. - Load More
