ida replied to the topic 1st year BLA student second guessing choice in Landscape Arch in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 11 years, 11 months ago
The answer to this is easy. If you can’t handle low pay, long hours and crappy job security, do something else. I would go for the engineering degree to be on the safe side, and if you still want to do landscape architecture, you can always get an MLA.

I remember when I was a young intern there would be 4 of us sitting at a table coloring a siteplan. It took us a couple of hours to finish and we still had to scan it and touch it up in PS. Now, you can have one person do that kind of work at the same amount of time in PS. Of course the “style” between hand and digital work is different, but in…[Read more]

I didn’t have the chance to watch the presentations, but design wise, Foster’s idea of the large common spaces are what is needed in today’s office building. Zaha’s, just looking at the model, is just pretty with little interesting functional element. I like her work, but let’s not forget what architecture (and landscape architecture) is – spaces…[Read more]

You don’t need a Masters to be successful, but I do see job listings for senior-level positions requiring a masters degree… so down the road you may need it.
For me, the theoretical larch topics such as landscape urbanism or parametrics interest me, so I would probably go back to school to learn that. I would also go back to school if I wanted…[Read more]

hmm… that is strange. I really don’t know why that would be. Maybe you had a lot of crapware running in the background while you were using autocad? How about sketchup? Does it run slower too?

I don’t see many old people as support staff. They are either management or the principal. What happens to those who are not so good in business, or those who are not good at being “the face” of the company? Do they remain as designers, the people who work behind the scenes? Or do they get kicked out and replaced by younger designers?

What’s your budget? If it’s not much, then an entry-level AMD would be better than the entry-level Intel. In the mid and pro range, Intel (i5 and i7) preforms better in tests.

Sounds like if you want to last in this field, you have to give up on being creative and become more of a business man/woman. That’s a shame because I enjoy getting my hands dirty and making things.

ida replied to the topic Nerds in the landscape (How does lar respond to a tech culture?) in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 12 years, 3 months ago
I think technology would be more useful in large parks more than plazas. For Central Park I believe there is an app that plays geo-coded audio recordings as you visit certain areas, and when you take a pic of a tree within the park with your phone, the app identifies that tree. I’ve been to Central Park many times, but I think this…[Read more]

So you are saying nerds prefer to experience their environments via their devices rather than simply just looking/smelling/hearing? If that’s what people want, I suppose we can introduce more interactive elements such as a digital wall that responds to a person’s NFC-enabled smartphone… I don’t know, what are your ideas?

What exactly are the issues that we can address by adding something physical? Do nerds have needs that are different than any other human being?

ida replied to the topic Too much text? in the forum PORTFOLIO & RESUME 12 years, 4 months ago
Yes you can reduce the text, but you should try place the text in one area rather than in-between the images. Having text in-between reduces the images’ impact. Right now your pages look like a muddled mess of gray. If you need a caption to describe the image, the caption should only be 1 sentence or 1 line, not a paragraph block. I agee with the…[Read more]

You’re basically telling the employer, “if you hire me, I will put in 60% effort. The other 40% I will use to pursue my other career. And while I’m working in your office doing landscape design, I will think about how I can improve the portrait painting I am doing for another client.”
Good luck

It’s difficult looking at your work and reading the text with the black bars in the way. I’d loose them or move them further away from the content. White space is your best friend. Yes, loose your pic and the palm trees on the cover, and just stick to one font type…
Keep the graphic design clean and simple and let your work stand out.
And are…[Read more]

I rarely work when I’m out of the office (work is for work and home is for rest dammit), so I think Ultrabooks are great for the light-duty jobs and for business travel. I have a powerful desktop at home and at the office to do the hardcore stuff, so I don’t have any need for anything better than what a sub $1000 Ultrabook or a $500 laptop can…[Read more]
