Wes Arola, RLA replied to the topic Autocad 2011 – Where do I start? in the forum TECHNOLOGY 13 years, 7 months ago
I taught myself by drafting old projects I had drafted by hand. you can then take those cad drawings and bring them into sketchup. great way to build/update your portfolio, and you will learn cad as you do so.

You’ve gotta branch out to other fields who are looking for graphic design, rendering, modeling, and drafting services if you are looking to ‘hang in there’ for the time being and still build your resume. The harsh reality and key to finding a job these days it to drop your standards and be willing to relocate.

Wes Arola, RLA replied to the topic SketchUp rendering in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 13 years, 8 months ago
Reflection, shadow, texture and lighting are all important in a renderer and being able to adjust those quite easily would be great. Some renderers have their own components which will emit light and reflectivity and the renderer will notice these preset characteristics, but it would be nice to select a material or object you have in your model and…[Read more]

focus on efficiency – if you can market the process and how little time it took you to produce a product thats what will get you hired. stick with sketchup, photoshop and autocad. all other ‘fancy’ modeling and rendering will be outsourced in most offices unless there is money to do it in house.

You bring up a threatening issue – there are plenty of programs like this and uneducated people capable of developing cheesy backyard designs. The ignorance of the common person about what a landscape architect is legally capable of producing is something that we as a profession will always battle. The truth is, it is hard to explain what we…[Read more]

keep things simple and available to potential employers. send an employer a direct link to download a pdf of your work in school and experience in real world construction documents. truthfully, an employer looking for an entry level intern doesnt care too much about the pretty pictures and renderings. show those skills; but stress and showcase…[Read more]

A smart design software could be developed based on that pre programmed tags and info – it will be very interesting in to see where BIM takes its places in the landscape architecture realm..it will definitely start with the systems design like irrigation, drainage, and material takeoffs before it can start to do cut fill and more organic land…[Read more]

that is the appropriate thing to do in a standards library, once they are copied from the standards library they can then be placed on the appropriate layer. Are you currently working in an office that has their standards setup differently?

We have a standard ctb, but if you leave everything on zero layer and assign true colors that seems to be the most efficient and easy way to get a rendered look and a ‘clean’ set of office standards for graphics atleast
